A preprint ☀️ forming the foundation of my PhD dissertation. It traces how accessibility, the “potential” to spatially interact, relates to spatial interaction modelling. It also outlines how constants from this oh-so-related field can be folded into accessibility to yield interpretable units!

Friends, one of the biggest issues during this election has been Housing. Disabled Ontarians are among those most impacted by Ontario's failure to build accessible housing, ensure full rent control, and we are under direct attack through policing of unhoused disabled folks.
Alt: The image is a composite of black-and-white
portraits of various Ontario Premiers arranged in
repeating rows against a purple background. Over the
portraits is text. First, large yellow text reading:
"Housing".

Followed by white text in a list: "Do not reintroduce Bills
238 and 242 to further policing and other powers to
undermine the safety and wellbeing of unhoused
disabled people.
Amend the Building Code to reflect Inclusive and
Universal Design Standards, along the lines of
Toronto’s Accessible, Affordable Housing Specifications.
Implement full rent control across Ontario:
- Scrap the 2018 Rent Control Exemption for new
builds;
- End Vacancy Decontrol; and
- Eliminate Above Guideline Rent Increases
Fund and develop diverse, accessible, affordable
housing supply through public housing and
cooperatives, along with low-barrier “actually
supportive” housing options.
Redirect funding for prison expansion projects (like
Kemptville) to more housing!"

Imagine if Olivia Chow or a Liberal/NDP premier said this. There would be so much outrage, accusations of communist dictatorships, etc etc. But we operate in a landscape where it's just "harmless" goofy bumbling Doug Ford.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

In Canada, we don't have formalized regional land-use and transportation planning structures. It is more ad-hoc, unlike the MOP structure in the US. Came across a recent working paper that details some transferable lessons from their system to Canada. A School of Cities (UofT) paper. Interesting!

Im/mobilities, land and climate change are inescapably linked. Disasters impact those with the least, disproportionality. We need to stop burning fossil fuels and must build (back, anew and retrofit) sustainably.

🤔 Fossil-fuel driven climate change is making insuring certain 'property markets' unprofitable. Insurers known this. But de-risking and reg. caps can extend coverage to riskier properties at a cost to everyone's premiums (insurers operate globally and profit-seek)... Is this status-quo worth saving?

Folks @ttcalerts.bsky.social in Toronto is setting precedents for accessible paratransit that we need to stop now. The "Family of Services" model is coming to a city near you, unless we act together. In support of the campaign from @ttcriders.bsky.social, see our letter: www.djno.ca/post/letter-...
Alt: On sepia toned photo of blue sky, with buildings in front and an older red and white TTC subway sign. Above the sign, a grey shape of a speech balloon appears cut into the photo. On the balloon, white text reads "While GTHA interconnectedness and regional transit accessibility becomes more complex and less straightforward for disabled riders, the TTC is serving as a model for how many transit agencies wish to move forward, which sadly, is in the wrong direction."

Much of the failing private infrastructures of the global south are down to IMF and other global governing institutions forcing them into opening up their public goods to private rent-seeking landlords. It is not just local corruption but global economic coercion.
