Chloe Macleavy and Jasmine Scott-Dickins are both studying Marine Biology at SOS and are currently doing their placement year as research officers with Trashfree Trails (TFT). At the moment they are planning a litter research fieldwork day which will take place in Newborough Nature reserve.

At the end of @tidalites.bsky.social 2025 in Liverpool, a group of attendees went on a road trip to Pembrokeshire to visit the tidalite at Wiseman's Bridge. Much fun, lots of discussions, and several project ideas came out of the trip. See you all in Korea in 4 year's time :)

About 18 to 14 million years ago, global temperatures spiked in an event called the Miocene Climatic Optimum. Despite these conditions, we still had coral reefs. But those corals were pushed to their very limit to survive, at a physiological cost. 🧪🌊 Link: www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Inorganic aragonite precipitation rates as a function of seawater Ωar at 23.7 °C (estimated mean annual SST for Poetz based on linear extension) and 28 °C (estimated early Badenian summer SST in the southern and central parts of the Central Paratethys).
The red vertical bar marks the reconstructed range of surface ocean Ωar of 2.7 to 3.5 for the MCO. Average calcification rates of the three fossil Porites corals studied (colored horizontal lines) are far from inorganic precipitation, consistent with carbonate chemistry up-regulation of the calcifying fluid.
