Also play Archrebel. The demo is a single mission... that's also a rolling 6-8 hour long ever-expanding scenario, in full Ironman mode. Make a bad call and lose a squaddie? They're just gone and you're going to have to deal with that for the rest of the mission. Also FANTASTIC audio and visuals.

I love the platforming part of 2d platformers. It's very tactile. And enemies that persist as physical dangers are even more tactile. It's a very meat and potato interaction. Simple, generally very good, but still not everyone's taste and that's fine, but it's not 'beaten' by more complexity.

anyways tl;dr for all this, as a GENERALIZATION with PLENTY OF CAVEATS: It's not a matter of new vs old. Contact Damage is a tool of level design. Forgoing that moves focus/interest way from the level design and onto the enemies themselves, which isn't inherently good or bad, but must be realized.

Nice and unambiguous. But just because something is synergistic doesn't mean you have to do it. Games without contact damage tend to focus more on whatever mechanics the game has. You can make a 'combat game' that just also happens to have platformers and jumping and plenty of reasons not to do CD.

I tend to personally like contact damage, especially in platformers. A moving hitbox is a very bare, to the metal interaction that is very tactile. Platformers are about working around obstacles and you have an enemy with contact damage is a mobile obstacle. It's very synergistic!

Ok I'm seeing arguing now rather than just lamenting so I gotta talk about CONTACT DAMAGE and whether it's fair or outdated or w/e and in general I just find all these questions to not make sense. It's a persistent hitbox that moves and can be attacked. It's a tool, resistant to category judgement.

Oh god. I just saw that Quake VR mod that won't let you install it unless you sign off on a multi-point checklist acknowledging and agreeing to the dev's pro-AI manifesto. I think this might be the single most insecure thing I've seen in the history of modding.

I really love how much the sprites in Boltgun 2 (even moreso than the first) look like painted miniatures. There's a soft-shaded matte look to them all. It makes the game feel like playing with intricately painted but still absurd toys.
