For as long as Hatwick Wood had grown, there had been a witch hiding in its trees. The witch was a steward of the wood, caring for it and making sure that the people of nearby villages never took too much from it. It was the witch’s sacred duty to do this, and their magic had flown wild and free as they protected the forest.
Although no one had never seen the steward of the wood, stories flowed through the families about the witch. Everyone knew that their role was the care for the forest, and if anything ever went wrong, the witch needed to be found in order to fix it. No one knew this better than the Ashtons.
Milo Ashton came from a long line of people who made their living in the forest. His grandfather, and his grandfather’s grandfather, and his grandfather’s grandfather’s grandfather, with every father in between and even further back; every one of the Ashtons were hunters. It wasn’t work that would make them rich, or elevate them above the common folk, but it was good, honest work that would always be needed. And the Ashtons had always hunted in Hatwick Wood.
Then Hatwick Wood was cursed.
