One of these days, I'm gonna look up a supposed author account to see if they're legit for following them back, & their Amazon page or official website's contact page will actually have a link to their account! ONE DAY!

Why haven't I followed you back: No clear way to verify the account that followed me actually belongs to the author it claims to be. Please make sure to list all your social media on your official website or linktr.ee (free), KDP Amazon page, Goodreads official page, or your book's copyright page.

An engineer. A Dragon hoarding romance books. A dysfunctional family of gods. Not the start of a joke, but Sy's undoing. Pitch: When the chosen Empress is assassinated, her disabled and gutsy ex-girlfriend, Sy, must triumph over a dysfunctional family of ancient gods or submit to fulfilling the chosen’s grim fate as the gods’ eternal slave and weapon against mortals.
94,000 words Crossover Fantasy
Comps:
T. Kingfisher’s Nettle & Bone
Damsel (2024 film)
Hannah Kaner’s Godkiller
Margaret Owen’s Little Thieves

Themes & Tropes:
- Forbidden Love - Hot Banter
- Feminine Rage - Anti-Chosen
- Found Family - Second Chances
- Dark Humor - Identity
- Friends-to-lovers - Faustian Bargain
- Choosing vs. being chosen
- Dual-Timeline

Representation:
- LGBTQIA+ - BIPOC
- Mental Health - Disability
- Neurodivergence - Chronic Illness

Moodboard:
Dark fantasy Victorian vibes with purple color composition.
Top row, left-to-right: a Byronic handsome man in black, a palace, a dark figure burning in hellfire, a masked female assassin of dark complexion holding a dagger, a serpentine forest trail at night marked with red flowers.
At the center, next to a silver plume, is the text: “This world, my dear, is the slaughterhouse of noble ideals.”
Bottom row, left-to-right: a dark gaslit street, a gaslit city blanketed in coal smog at night, a young woman in a Victorian gown, wrought-iron gates opened to a foreboding foggy estate in the dark, a trail of red petals leading to a dark stone temple gate.

A gaunt mouse snatched bread crumbs from my lunch tray. I did not have the heart to give her a name, afraid I might lose her, too.
The lingering scent of mud and mildew hung in the air, a long-forgotten tomb. Through the thin mattress, the bed’s cast-iron rods dug into my ribs. I clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering and pulled the threadbare blanket tighter around my body, hugging my knees to my chest. It did little against the chill creeping into my bones. The raging blizzard had transformed the courtyard into a churning white sea, rattling the broken window shutters hanging askew.
I was not allowed visitors or to set foot outside. My only reminder of life beyond these walls was the peeling wallpaper’s faded floral pattern. The medications I was forced to swallow left a cotton taste in my mouth and a dull ache in my skull.

I believe most readers aren't too hung up on the gender/race/nationality of the protagonist. We relate to each other on a deeper, human level. I grew up with classical fantasy, where my own identity was never represented. But that was my escape from a horrid life. #writingcommunity #booksky 💙📚 📖

Why I wrote a fantasy with zero romance: #booksky #writingcommunity #ValentinesDay #romance 💙📚 📖🏳️‍🌈⚙️⚧️ 🪐📚

Shida Ketzer: Growing up unloved, abused, & oppressed, I worked my butt off to earn it all: Career, money, social status, a science Ph.D. degree, my favorite car, friends' circle, a fit body, & yes, even finally feeling beautiful. But starved for love, I gave it all up for a love who didn't deserve it. He sucked away everything, leaving me shattered, spent, & desolate...

So, f*ck Valentine's Day! The only ones deserving my love & trust are characters in books!

[5-star review]

Intricate and Intriguing

The way the world, politics, and culture all entwined so seamlessly was wonderfully balanced.

Quill is a complex character that doesn't bore and doesnt miss the mark.

The world building was moved with the story, never pausing it.

The layers of culture and politics meshed well and lent a depth to the world around Quill, giving insight into a broader world that Ketzer has created.

This will be a world to visit frequently!
