“Before the nation could support a modernist avant-garde, however, it first needed to develop an awareness of art and organizations within which dialogue and controversy could take place. What was needed was a continuation of the efforts timidly begun with the WPA.”

You know one of the oddities of our time is that at least some things that now get dismissed as utopian dreams are not future hopes, but things that really did exist in living memory — affordable housing, a proper social safety net, a climate that isn’t running out of balance. Many others.

On "AI slurs" (clanker, etc) -- on one depressing level, I worry that slurs for machines humanize them b/c assigning slurs is what people do to people. But I understand the impulse, because we assign slurs to dehumanize. But if you tell me to "kick a clanker" and am gonna feel bad for it.

Jan and Aleida Assmann are great on cultural memory, and fundamental to the field of Memory Studies. I remember Paul Ricoeur’s Memory, History, Forgetting being great on memory’s dependency on forgetting. There’s on course lots written on techne and memory, which I’m sure you’re aware of.
