I would like to formally announce that the #GlasgowInterfaceExplorer revD development (the next iteration: with the same FPGA but 32 digital I/Os and 8 single-ended analog channels that can be configured as 4 differential ones) is well underway with a CS campaign planned later this year; stay tuned!

added a new #GlasgowInterfaceExplorer applet, `control-clock`: a simple clock generator for when you just need to feed something into the XI pin of an MCU or something. you can use it in combination with other applets! e.g.: `glasgow multi probe-rs ... ++ control-clock --clk A7 -f 2000`

we do respect in theory the concept of trying to avoid sounding like a weeb when translating, but the problem with that is that the monogatari series is fundamentally otaku media, the characters constantly make otaku culture references, they *should* sound like weebs you know!

These right-angle SMD adapters go kinda hard. Makes sense if you want to have a hall effect sensor at the right orientation.
A render of an SOT23-6, mounted on an adapter that has traces running from the component mounted vertically to the bottom of the adapter so it can be soldered to a PCB horizontally. Two more adapters, one SOT23-6, one SOIC-8.

the next problem was to *modulate* the signal with morse code. he used another mag amp. this one *detunes* the giant transformer that gathers current from all the poles and matches the impedance to the antenna array. turning off the key shifts the frequency, reducing the output power by over 90%.
schematic of the complete system, showing the generator tied to a large transformer, one end of which goes out to an antenna array that looks like the world's fanciest laundry line. another coil of the transformer goes to a magnetic amplifier circuit with a morse code key.

the next big problem that Alexanderson had to solve was controlling the speed. any variation caused the output frequency to drift out of the range that the antenna could support. this circuit uses a closed-loop design with a resonant filter to control magnetic amplifiers.
illustrated schematic showing saturation coils (magnetic amplifiers) controlling the amount of power going to a motor. the motor is connected to the high frequency generator we just discussed. an auxiliary pick off winding generates a signal proportional to the speed, and this feeds back into the saturation coil setup to regulate that speed.

so now the maximum frequency is controlled mainly by the speed and the number of slots in the spinning rotor. and those can be packed together pretty tightly! it's very similar to how a Hammond organ works.
closeup photo of the rotor, showing a radial array of slots near the edge. it almost looks like a rotary encoder wheel.

see, a alternator's output frequency depends on 2 things: how fast it turns and how many *poles* you have (basically groups of windings.) to bump up the frequency, you have to put on as many poles as you can physically fit and then run it as fast as you can!
a pen-and-ink detailed illustration of a rotating generator. the rotor (wheel part) is surrounded by coffee-can sized coils of wire. one of them is circled in red.

but Professor Elihu Thomson and a certain Mr. Tesla (yes, *that* Tesla) figured out a way to build an AC alternator that could produce 10 amps at up to 12,000 Hz!

The idea that you can just “teach computer science” and be apolitical is a beautiful dream that expired in the 2000s, at the latest. Computer science has re-organized every facet of our society: it is inherently political. Instead of taking this idea seriously, we ran from it. Now we live in hell.
