My biggest ick? Unnecessary consumerism. The more I've done to avoid buying unnecessary the more eagregious people buying stupid shit feels. "But I want it to look good" you're buying glass jars for spells to look cutsie when you have 4 expires salsa jars in your fridge. Clean them out and use those

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a whale fall lies at the bottom of the ocean. The bones are covered in a variety of bottom feeders and ocean critters. Panel 2: closer up, the group of bottom feeders are holding red solo cups and chatting with each other. Among the group is a tiger prawn, who thinks to himself, “I needed this…”

I was in awe and absolutely starstruck to stand in front of the Pentaceratops at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
A picture of a Pentaceratops skeleton posed with a plaque and a certificate from Guiness World Records for being the largest land animal skull ever discovered. It's skull is about 10.5 feet from frills to beak. A close up of the plaque and Certificate. Plaque gives info on the Pentaceratops. It was discovered during WWII but was lost to time during the chaos of the war. It was reexamined 50 years later and is now on display .

It may be surprising to some that there are thousands of undescribed species just sitting in museums awaiting description. One of the main reasons this problem exists is that taxonomy is undervalued and underfunded, a trend that coincides with the devaluing of studies on natural history.

Had the opportunity to go see the Selenite Salt Flats in Cherokee Oklahoma this week. It looks straight out of fiction. Getting to dig for hourglass selenite with the whole family was such a treat.
A panorama view of the Selenite Salt Flats in Cherokee Oklahoma. Clear blue sky and flat salty desert as far as they eye can see. A car parked close by to some grassy dunes on the edge of the flats. A picture of the flats. Salty flat ground meets perfect blue sky. Nothing else in sight. A collection of selenite crystals dug up at the salt flats. This is a geographically specific type of crystal called Hourglass Selenite due to a hour glass formation in the middle of most specimens .

Saw a fragment of the mid Holocene fossil forest at Portreath yesterday, revealed by winter storms and low tide. Impressive piece of truck on organic-rich clay filled with sticks and seeds. Probably 4000-6000 years old. Drowned when sea level rose following the end of the last glaciation.
A fossil tree trunk exposed on the beach at Portreath. Me for scale crouching on the sands. Whole trunk is several metres long. Close up of the fossil tree trunk exposed on the beach at Portreath. Grain of the wood clearly visible. My finger is pointing to the underlying clayey paleosol, filled with organic matter, sticks, seeds etc.Close up of the clayey paleosol containing sticks and seeds.
