In @statnews.com , @aniloza.bsky.social covered today's new Pew survey on attitudes toward science. I said: "Every university researcher in particular relies on the public to do our work, and we all have to contribute to building the public's trust." www.statnews.com/2026/01/15/a...
But, scientists should do more to foster trust with the public, said Philip Cohen, a sociologist at the University of Maryland who recently published a paper on the
"widening political divide over science."
"What Trump, Kennedy, and the anti-science movement are doing is not our
fault, but we have work to do. Every university researcher in particular relies on the public to do our work, and we all have to contribute to building the public's trust," he said. "We do that in everyday interactions, in speaking and writing about our work wherever it's needed, and being part of the public debate on these issues. A lot of researchers don't want to get involved, or they think it undermines their credibility to speak out on public issues, but the opposite is true. We no longer have a choice."

We do research to contribute to knowledge. That only happens if people can read it. In modern democracies, we don't choose who gets to have the knowledge we produce, thankfully. There are barriers to accessing our research, and we want to reduce them. The ideal is universal access. /1

What is the role of professional scholars in civic life? How and why should academics seek to reach audiences beyond their disciplines and institutions? Must there be tension between advancing along an academic career path and taking part in public conversations, or can these goals reinforce each other? Cohen will present his new book, Citizen Scholar, a practitioner’s guide to civic engagement today, showing current and aspiring social scientists how to build a career in the public sphere. Drawing from personal experience and in-depth research, Cohen gives straightforward advice that acknowledges professional risks as well as rewards. He calls on readers to embrace the reciprocal relationship between professional scholarship and active citizenship, arguing that aligning personal and vocational identities can enhance both public and academic contributions. Citizen Scholar explores intellectual work on social media, communication on topical issues, the role of political activism, and how to build trust while developing a public intellectual identity. It features lively examples from Cohen’s own work, from data-visualization principles to his experience suing President Trump for blocking him on Twitter—and winning.

It might be time to retire the GSS measure of ideal number of children
This seems very nerdy and technical, but it’s about topics lots of people care about — birth rates and political polarization.
