Delightful also to hear real eagle noises. In movies eagles are always dubbed with hawks, since hawks found fierce and eagles sound like adorable squeakers.

a lot of very annoying men have been going on about “restoring trust” in universities, by which they mean increasing “viewpoint diversity,” by which they mean privileging evidence-free conservative beliefs. but it seems like a bigger deal that students and faculty can’t trust their school this way:

The entire edifice of "sex-based rights" is an absurd moral and legal fiction wearing feminism's stolen clothes--and it seems this group of people promoting "Christian Rights" are trying a similar trick. The UK has fertilised itself for this perfidy with its own bullshit. Democracy is at risk.

Putting aside other potential issues of AI, I hate how even if you're savvy, it acts like sand thrown in the gears. And while some of us can clean out the gears or have personal sand protection, you know old people are being swindled with emails like this.

I've never even met a person that doesn't think the rise in identification was caused by the social influence of stigma decreasing over time. The disagreement is over whether the "ideal rate" is whatever happens with no social stigma, or whether Trumpian bigotry was required for some reason.

Reading @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social's beautiful book "Wanderlust: A history of walking" for the first time. The following quote is taken from her chapter on pilgrimages.
We are eternally perplexed by how to move toward forgiveness or healing or truth, but weknow how to walk from here to there, however arduous the journey. Too, we tend to imagine life as a journey, and going on an actual expedition takes hold of that image and makes it concrete, acts it out with the body and the imagination in a world whose geography has become spiritualized.

Just learned Annie Dillard died recently. Pilgrim at Tinker Creek was formative in constructing my religious views, such as they are.
“What I aim to do is not so much learn the names of the shreds of creation that flourish in this valley, but to keep myself open to their meanings, which is to try to impress myself at all times with the fullest possible force of their very reality. I want to have things as multiply and intricately as possible present and visible in my mind. Then I might be able to sit on the hill by the burnt books where the starlings fly over, and see not only the starlings, the grass field, the quarried rock, the viney woods, Hollins pond, and the mountains beyond, but also, and simultaneously, feathers’ barbs, springtails in the soil, crystal in rock, chloroplasts streaming, rotifers pulsing, and the shape of the air in the pines. And, if I try to keep my eye on quantum physics, if I try to keep up with astronomy and cosmology, and really believe it all, I might ultimately be able to make out the landscape of the universe. Why not?”

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

Not even just ending capitalism, but even sharply curtailing it. It's also easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine a serious limitarian proposal (my suggestion is capping each person at a maximum of $50 million in wealth and 1 AI waifu).

Before saying a word, [Ajahn Chah] motioned to a glass at his side. "Do you see this glass?" he asked us. "I love this glass. It holds the water admirably. When the sun shines on it, it reflects the light beautifully. When I tap it, it has a lovely ring. Yet for me, this glass is already broken. When the wind knocks it over or my elow knocks it off the shelf and it falls to the ground and it shatters, I say, 'Of course.' But when I understand that this glass is already broken, every minute with it is precious." ....

Ajahn Chah was capturing the Buddhist insight into the impermanence of things but not falling into the abyss of negating them utterly. He was giving another version of the Fire Sermon where everything is broken but everything is also dear.

I always appreciated this Calvin and Hobbes cartoon because it captures human perplexity with life and death.
Calvin, talking to Hobbes outside: This is where dad buried the little raccoon. I didn't even know he existed a few days ago and now he's gone forever. It's like I found him for no reason. I had to say goodbye as soon as I said hello. Still, in a sad, awful, terrible way, I'm happy I met him. *sniff* What a stupid world.
