Curtis @soccurt.bsky.social · 13hI stayed silent about how, for complex reasons, that I also do not want my inheritance. But if I hadn't read Mann, I don't think I would have appreciated my father's struggle to consider what will remain of his legacy. 030

He's old, and between me and my three siblings, he has only 2 grandchildren, and he's not sure how long the land will stay in the family. 110
Curtis @soccurt.bsky.social · 13hI feel that Mann captured that inner compulsion of the Protestant ethic, and how it plays out in a family's hopes and legacy, in exacting detail. It also helped me understand a tragic conversation I had with my own father about 2 months after finishing the book. 110
Curtis @soccurt.bsky.social · 13hOne of the remarkable artistic encounters I've had recently is with Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks. I didn't think a novel about a bourgeois German family would speak across cultures or time, yet it was engrossing. 150

I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people. 753376745
