One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Are they right wing, or do they feel they are not allowed to be left wing? The scars of the McCarthy witch hunts and "reds under the bed" propaganda run deep. Left wing thought was presented by their government as unAmerican.

We watched 'North by Northwest' a few weeks back and were surprised by how naughty her character was allowed to be, given when it was made. That said, if you're as old as I am, mention of her name instantly generates Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' 'Rattlesnakes' as an earworm. 1/2

The garlic oil ones are good. The noodles are thinner than the chunky tomato. I only used 200ml of water. There is a lot of dried garlic in the flake pack, which disintegrated into the water. The garlic oil is strong. Nice and creamy. Good for a quick lunch!

Private Eye's Paul Foot on Jeffrey Archer. 4/4
THE TWO FACES OF THE PRESS

THE HE collapse of Lord Archer's bid to be mayor of London has led to a spate of hostile stories about him in the newspapers which previously protected him. The Sunday Times found space for a story about Archer and the painting he bought from the BCCI receivers which first appeared, in all its detail, in the Eye in July 1997.

VATE EV

EYE

The Observer of 5 December printed the reminiscences of Kitty Kelley about Archer's anti-Semitic outburst at a London lunch for top women the story was published in full in Eye 844 (22 April 1994).

The Mail newspapers, always Archer's most fervent admirers, have discovered that Michael Stacpoole, the flunky who paid off the prostitute at Victoria Station, now claims that he was lying and was paid tens of thousands not to give evidence at the libel trial. These worries of Mr Stacpoole appeared in the Eye in November 1988.

The Mail's Geoffrey Levy, who never published a word against any rich or famous person when they were in fashion, now denounces Archer for lying at the libel trial. Even Stewart Steven, who supported Archer through the thin and the thick of the libel trial, now declares that "everyone knew about Archer".

Ali these stories and allegations were printed in Private Eye long ago and studiously ignored by the great and good who, now that the allegations they spurned are proved beyond reasonable doubt, throw up their hands in horror, moaning: "Nobody ever told us."
