Another woodpecker for the #BirdOfTheDay theme #Black&Red, this time a lesser spotted -- fortunately quite common in our area, though hard to spot. #birds

There are up to 8,000 species of katydids in family Tettigoniidae, 255 in North America alone. But this hot pink katydid isn't some exotic species, it's a 'morph', a normal genetic color variant. Here's the weird part: this is the DOMINANT color gene in katydids. (📷: Audubon Zoo)
From Audubon Insectarium article (it's behind a paywall), a vibrantly pink katydid, probably fresh from molting, sitting on broad green leaves.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme chosen by Alan is #AngryBirds, any bird with an angry face. The alt is #MyBestSide, bird capture in profile. These Goldfinches are certainly angry, and birds always seem to be jostling to dislodge each other at our sunflower hearts feeder.
Two Goldfinches adopt an aggressive pose at a sunflower hearts feeder. They have their wings outstretched showing yellow and black feathers and their black and white tails.

Their red faces are clearly visible. One of the Goldfinches is holding on to the feeder while the other is trying to dislodge it.

#WITmonth book 7: Unmöglicher Abschied -- Han Kang, tr. Ki-Hyang Lee. A very odd book: the first apparent story (the relationship between the narrator and her friend) is gradually displaced by the historical "background", but without anything that makes us feel much connection with that story.
