for a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to kissenger, i'd highly recommend behind the bastards' episodes on him- they do a great job at covering the wide arc of his career for the uninitiated open.spotify.com/episode/4RLm...

The Good Die Young - Various Authors a good primer on the global footprint of arguably the most deeply evil yet fitting symbol of america's foreign policy. lots of interesting stuff on kissenger's philosophy too. glad i had some cursory knowledge of him- it assumes you know a good bit going in

Perdido Street Station - China Mieville what a chonker of a book in so many ways. the pedestrian-level worldbuilding and beautiful prose paints such a full picture of the setting. even if i had character issues in the back half, the ending knocked me flat- it'll be stuck in my head for a while

actually fucks me up knowing that the hwang donghyuk the creator of squid game lost teeth due to stress while filming s1, did not want to make a s2, and only did it bc he got severely underpaid and earned zero residuals, royalties, or bonuses from netflix for s1.
tweet from @DiscussingFilm squid game creator hwang dong-hyuk says i'm so exhausted. i'm so tired...i'm so sick of squid game. i'm so sick of my life making something, promoting something. so i'm not thinking about my next project right now. i'm just thinking about going to some remote island. attached is a screenshot from squid game season one showing lee jung jae.

I did something dumb
A calvin and hobbes meme explaining that all RPGs can be traced back to Ultima and Wizardry in 1981. Every game is either a play on ultima or wizardry. This extends to JRPGs because Dragon's Quest was influenced by Ultima and all dungeon crawlers are based on Wizardyr. Elder Scrolls is a Wizardry and Baldur's Gate is an Ultima. Wizardry was so popular in Japan it persisted for years exclusively in Japan as its own sub franchise before Digital Extremes remastered the series. SMT is a wizardry. Most Atlus and Xseed Dungeon Crawlers are.

Anyway the fact it was an underpaid food service worker that turned in the alleged CEO shooter for the reward money says A Whole Lot about America in itself. Billionaires make more than $50k just scratching their behinds but it's life-changing to someone who works at mcdonalds so they sold him out.

if you are at all curious as to why the entirety of south korea just said "lol fuck no" to the president declaring martial law this book may be a good place to start- the horrors of gwangju are still very much swimming in the memories of south koreans

Human Acts - Han Kang devoured this in just a couple sittings. easily my favorite read of the year. kang perfectly captures the lingering scars of the gwangju uprising, and how the wound of one person can splinter and web, both entangled and connecting those left in its wake

Read a lot of good books this year, but Human Acts is on a whole other level so far
From Han Kang's novel "Human Acts":

Or no, is it like a kind of glass?

Glass is transparent, right? And fragile. That's the fundamental nature of glass. And that's why objects that are made of glass have to be bandled with care. After all, if they end up smashed or cracked or chipped, then they're good for nothing, right, you just have to chuck them away.

Before, we used to have a kind of glass that couldn't be broken. A truth so hard and clear it might as well have been made of glass. So when you think about it, it was only when we were shattered that we proved we had souls. That what we really were was humans made of glass.

Maybe projection is less the word, and it's more finding parts of myself in another- which I'd argue is both less work and more fulfilling for the viewer than building a player identity from scratch. Even with a more defined personality, there's less room for friction.

For me it's ironically easier to project onto established characters since there's way more opportunities to empathize. There's no dissonance with, say, DE's Harry since every choice is something he would do. If I don't gel with a part of the character I just go "well yeah they're their own person."

Frankenstein: The 1818 Text - Mary Shelly yeah it's still one of the greats. the prose is moody and brooding in all the ways you want from gothic horror. glad I read up on the luddites beforehand, their influence can be felt greatly in the monster's plight. its critiques are all too relevant now

it really was the right call to make the author read 100 shoujo manga before starting the series, because everytime it transitions from the drama segments into action i actually get a little dissaponted- i always feel like i wanna hang around the characters for a little longer!

really glad i gave dandadan a second shot, the show's been a ton of fun. the first alien scene turned me away years ago, but thankfully it hasn't done anything like that again. momo's up there with maka albarn in my favorite shounen female leads, and I love seeing her and okarun being giant doofuses
