This is blowing up on the other site, and rightly so. This is an industry end run around the Supreme Court decision on Prop 12. The court has ruled this is not a dormant commerce clause issue and yet the industry now wants to use federal legislation to overturn state-level animal welfare laws.

Well, UMN has officially been hit. We just got an email from our president that an international grad student was detained yesterday. No further details provided. This. Is. Crushing.

Dear students, faculty and staff,

We are writing to inform you about a deeply concerning situation involving one of our international graduate students at the University of Minnesota.

We learned that, on March 27 at an off-campus residence, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials detained a graduate student enrolled on our Twin Cities campus. We are actively working to gather more details about this incident.

ICE has abducted an Iranian mechanical engineering doctoral student at the University of Alabama. thecrimsonwhite.com/120415/news/...
A UA student was reportedly detained by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement early Tuesday morning.

Alireza Doroudi, a doctoral student from Iran studying mechanical engineering, was reportedly arrested by ICE officers at around 5 a.m. at his home on Tuesday.

According to a message sent in a group chat that included Iranian students Tuesday, Doroudi entered the U.S. on an F-1 student visa issued by the U.S. Embassy in Oman in January 2023, after clearing all immigration checks. The message said Dourodi had his visa revoked six months after his arrival in the U.S.

“After receiving the revocation notice, Alireza immediately contacted ISSS [International Student and Scholar Services] at the University of Alabama,” the message said. “ISSS replied with confidence, stating that his case was not unusual or problematic and that he could remain in the U.S. legally as long as he maintained his student status.”

"A Certain Interest in Curiosity": Manipulation in Early Medical Photography and the Erotics of Pathologized Viewing

Brynne McBryde, PhD

University of Maryland

Wednesday, April 16, 2025
5:30 pm Lecture
6:45 - 7:15 Social Gathering

In 1869 an innovative new medical journal the Photographic Review of Paris Hospitals (Revue photographique des hôpitaux de Paris) made its debut. Unlike previous journals and textbooks, which relied on hand-made prints for illustrations, the Photographic Review published photographs taken in the Paris hospitals, touting their “truth” and “superiority to other visual mediums.” What are we to make, then, of the fact that several of the photographs in the journal have quite clearly been manipulated? This talk looks carefully at the types of images that were published in the Photographic Review, the ways they were manipulated, and the dynamics of elite male social networks in nineteenth-century France to explore the motivations of the journal’s editors and readers and how they have become sanitized by notions of medical objectivity today. Together, we will consider the role that pleasure played and plays in viewing and sharing images of extreme physical difference and what, if anything, separates medical looking from other forms of visual consumption.
Please be aware that this talk includes photographs of nude people, some featuring genitalia, whose level of consent is impossible to determine.
