The Cornell AAUP Chapter is outraged by the sexual violence that was committed at Chi Phi in 2024. We call for the community to come together on Monday, October 5 at 4:30pm in Ho Plaza, to stand in support of the survivors of sexual violence. Our full statement is here.
We are outraged by the continued culture of misogyny and by the continued pervasiveness of violence against women at Cornell and at universities and colleges across the country. We are outraged that so many women at Cornell have reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact.

We are deeply disturbed by Cornell University administration’s response and communications to the community, initially in 2024 and now. Cornell administrators point community members to resources, but do not exercise leadership in creating space to process the harm, the outrage, and to change the culture of misogyny. In moments of crisis such as this, we need leaders, not administrators.

The Cornell administration’s responses reveal its failure to understand and respond appropriately to actual harm and threats to safety on campus. It has used its internal communications to issue elaborate accusations, and it has imposed excessive discipline against students for political protests where there was no threat of harm or violence. And yet, when it comes to sexual violence, Cornell’s communications have been oblique or silent, leaving the community frustrated, fearful, or angry about the administration’s lack of transparency about how it will take effective responses.

We stand in solidarity with victims of sexual violence. We are outraged by the treatment of Jane Doe. We stand in solidarity with student organizations who have been demanding better, with faculty, staff, and students who have been organizing spaces to process and demand change. We do not yet know precisely how or why this case was so egregiously mishandled. What we do know is that it is the most recent example of the systemic failure of Cornell to protect its community — from patients at Cornell Weill to Cornell students — from sexual violence. This system must change.

The president of Cornell hit two students with his car, lied about what happened, and got away with it. The story illustrates an under-reported crisis in higher education: administrators and the trustees they answer to are increasingly hostile to the idea of college itself. I wrote about it here:

Friends attending #AAA2025 - some health stuff is keeping me from all the spooky fun in NOLA but I have to boost this Thursday sesh on “The Specter of Fascism” co-organized with the best comrades. GET THERE! There will be brilliant people, urgent scheming, ZINES. #anthrosky 👻📚✊✨
There is a specter haunting the globe. Once imagined as a hollow revenant of 20th century catastrophe, fascism again looms large in our political present: as a resurrected governing formation; a glaring threat to minority lifeways; a crisis of liberal norms; an incendiary charge to lob at one's opponents; and, perhaps most often, a question. Questions like the oft-invoked "Is this fascism, yet?" embed a temporality that makes it hard to mobilize, for they posit fascism as that which cannot be named until too late. Historically, conceptually, politically, we hold this position is untenable. Rather, the ghosts of fascism are emergent, tangible, hauntological presences across a spectrum of horizons. This roundtable therefore gathers scholars who are not content to consign fascism to the extreme, nor to the 20th century. We study fascism that calls itself by many names and charges banal sites of social life: mundane violences that emerge in liberal institutions, structure school curricula, shape relationships with nature, identify as "critical" and "feminist." Turning from book burnings to blockbuster films, dictators to PTAs, and examining sites of racialized and gendered violence across the Global North and South, we consider fascism not as an ideal type but as it haunts the everyday – all with an eye toward grasping fash-ish moods before they advance into full-fledged fascist masses.Despite a growing sense that fascism is on the rise, boundary work has muddled what could be a clarion call for antifascist research. Popular responses range from naive tolerance to bloody confrontation, and academics appear hamstrung by a similar dissensus. Some frame fascism as an illiberal force; others as an apparition that stupefies the masses into (neo)liberal norms. Some call developing a general theory of fascism the most pressing matter of our time; others hold the concept loses teeth when abstracted. Some lament that fascism "is not who we are" in liberal democracies, while others locate its inception at democracies' frontiers. These debates are hardly frivolous, but while they unfold, fascism unfolds, too. There are questions worth exploring that do not hinge on their belabored resolution. And anthropology, ever curious about the instability of meaning, is precisely the discipline to ask them.In short: we believe anthropology has rarely been more needed, but also that our field needs work to meet this moment. Recent scholarship has gestured notionally toward the possibilities of an antifascist anthropology, but the time has come for thinking programmatically. Together, we ask what fascism becomes when unhinged from its natal contexts. We map its spectral presence in domains from home to healthcare, economy to education. We inquire how to approach it as an ethnographic object and as the condition of our lives and work. And we consider how to remake anthropology into an antifascist discipline that can fight back not only in theory, but in practice.

Apropos of nothing, "Reading Fascists Reading Shakespeare" is now out in Public Culture. We grapple with the surprising glut of Shakespeare references in far-right fiction (so you don't have to) and ask wtf is going on there. The essay starts like this: doi.org/10.1215/0899...
Screenshot of first page of article in the journal Public Culture.

Title reads atop the page in bold font: Reading Fascists Reading Shakespeare: Literary Populism in White Power Fiction.

Beneath that, authors: Chloe Ahmann and Devin Proctor

Beneath that, the article:

Five days after he helped Donald Trump win the 2016 US presidential election, news broke that chief strategist Steve Bannon once penned a rap musical based on William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. The play, set amid the 1992 Los Angeles riots, features a grisly war between the Bloods and Crips, who trade poetic spars like, “I’m an OG from the hood,” and “I will return to rep my peeps!” Rarely has Roman tragedy been such comedic fodder.

Within weeks, Bannon’s collaborator leaked the script, and choice excerpts landed in the New York Times. By spring, NowThis had staged a table read with seasoned actors. Subscribers to Vanity Fair soon learned that this was Bannon’s second adaptation. During his fabled time in Hollywood, the would- be playwright pitched an intergalactic take on Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus.

Reporting on the play is, understandably, hilarious—a bit of light within a dark 100 days when brazen White supremacists filed into the West Wing and fractured liberal norms with a ferocious speed. As newspapers mourned democracy’s demise and prophesied fascism’s rise in the United States for the first (but not the last) time in this century, stories on Bannon’s Shakespeare fandom broke from the seriousness of it all.

What made them funny?

WHOA. On March 15, a Cornell PhD student with UK and Gambian citizenship, here on a student visa, filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Trump's EO aimed at foreign students accused of "antisemitism. Last night, the DOJ emailed asking him to come to ICE to be detained and put into removal proceedings.
Last night at 12:52 AM, the Department of Justice contacted the undersigned via email. Under the subject line “Momodou Taal et al v. Trump, 25-cv-335 (NDNY),” the government informed the undersigned for the first time that the government intended to serve Mr. Taal with a Notice to Appear (NTA), and that they intended to take Mr. Taal into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Given that this information confirms the factual basis for Plaintiffs’ request for an emergency temporary restraining order, ECF No. 23, and the increased urgency with which the Court’s intervention is needed, we respectfully request the Court construe this letter as any procedurally appropriate vehicle to obtain the same. Plaintiffs’ counsel is immediately available to follow up with any submissions the Court deems appropriate in this extraordinary situation. Attached to this letter is an affidavit from Counsel Eric Lee (Exhibit 4), the government’s 12:52 AM email (Exhibit 5), and Plaintiffs’ counsel’s reply (Exhibit 6). The email reads: My colleagues and I represent the United States in this matter. The applications for admission of Messrs. Stone, Moss, and myself to the bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York are pending, so we have not noticed our appearances yet. But we wanted to reach out to establish a line of communication, and relate some information concerning your client. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has asked us to convey to you the following. ICE invites Mr. Taal and his counsel to appear in-person at the HSI Office in Syracuse at a mutually agreeable time for personal service of the NTA and for Mr. Taal to surrender to ICE custody. Accordingly, if you are interested in proposing such a date and time, we will promptly forward it to ICE for consideration
