A labor of love and laughter!! Our book _Sick Jokes_ is finally out with @manchesterup.bsky.social ! Working on this with @katiesnow.bsky.social and @lauracowley.bsky.social has been a blast, and our contributors are BRILLIANT! Have your libraries order it!!
Me (a white woman with shortish dark blonde hair in a black and white horizontal striped dress) smiling while standing in front of a green plant holding two copies of the book _Sick Jokes: Visual Histories of Humour, Health and the Body_Close up of the cover of _Sick Jokes: Visual Histories of Humour, Health and the Body_. The cover includes the title in orange and "Edited by Christine Slobogin, Katie Snow and Laura Cowley" in yellow. The cover image is a black-and-white photograph of a white man with glasses and an oxygen tube and hospital gown pulled up to reveal both a Karposi's sarcoma and a happy face tattoo.Photo of two pages at the beginning of the book.

A selection:

A note on the cover image
When deciding which image from this volume to put on the cover, we knew that we wanted something that captured one of the book's central themes: the use of humour as a means of reclaiming power from the medical systems or diagnoses that so often leave us feeling powerless. Marc Geller's photograph of Tom Shearer does exactly that, with Tom's personality - embodied in his smiley face tattoo and steady gaze - posing a pointed challenge to medical and cultural assumptions about what it means to be, or to joke about being, 'sick'. The context in which this portrait (one of many, discussed in Jo Michael Rees's Chapter 6, in this volume) was taken also suggests the importance of laughing in the faces of death and danger, of creating community and of sharing experience - other prominent themes throughout Sick Jokes.
We are very aware of the ethical quandaries of sharing patient photographs, especially on a book cover, publicly viewable on shelves and on screens. While we cannot get consent from Shearer for this specific use of his photograph, we have received permission from Geller. The portrait was taken by Geller on assignment for the American LGBT magazine The Advocate in 1991, to accompany an interview about Shearer and Beowulf Thorne's radically funny wine Diseased Pariah News. Geller stated in an email to us that he felt Tom's bravery in creating such a zine comes through in the way he faced the camera. While we cannot know how Shearer or Thorne imagined these portraits might circulate after their deaths, the photographs belong to a project and artistic friendship that was itself public-facing.
We hope that this photograph draws people into this volume while also showing Shearer as he wanted to be perceived. We hope that we have done him - and other patients, artists and jokers - justice.

Postpartum depression is usually understood today as a medical condition rooted in hormones or
brain chemistry. But how did it come to be defined this way? Drawing on Moran's book, Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression in America, she traces the emergence of postpartum depression as a diagnostic and cultural concept from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Through a deep dive into the pivotal decades of the 1970s and 1980s, she discusses how postpartum distress was reframed first from the “baby blues” to a feminist critique of motherhood, and then later to a medicalized and increasingly apolitical diagnosis.

Our next NCHED (National Collaborative on Humanities and Ethics in Dentistry) event is September 29! See poster for details! (Including our new logo!!) 🦷
The Art of Observation: Dentistry, Creativity, and the Visual Arts.

September 29, 2026
Via Zoom
1 pm EST

Join Artist-in-Residence Laura Spector for a conversation with
Dr. David Teasdale, UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry
alumnus, practicing dentist, and exhibiting artist. Together, they
will explore the connections between observation, creativity, and
professional practice, reflecting on how the visual arts can enrich
the way we see, interpret, and engage with the world. Inspired by
nature, faith, and the expressive power of color, Teasdale’s
paintings invite viewers to experience joy, spontaneity, and
emotional resonance. This special event offers an opportunity to
learn about the artist’s creative journey and discover how art and
dentistry share a common foundation in careful observation and
meaningful attention.

The best piece of advice I can give to incoming college students is that the freshman 15 doesn’t matter. Go out with your friends and have fun. Get late night ice cream with your roommate & let your parents spoil you when you go home. Going up a size won’t kill you, but an eating disorder might.

2. EXECUTIVE PAY AT EXETER IS OUT OF CONTROL. IF JUST THE 16 HIGHEST-PAID EXECS CAPPED THEIR SALARY AT £120K, WE'D SAVE MORE MONEY THAN ALL THE CUTS TO ARCHAEOLOGY & HISTORY!
3. NO MEANINGFUL CONSULTATION, BUT A CONFUSED MESS: FAULTY AND INSUFFICIENT DATA, NO REAL DISCUSSION, AND AN IMPOSSIBLE, INSULTING AND UNREASONABLE TIMETABLE TO PUSH THIS THROUGH OVER THE SUMMER.
4. AN ALL-STAFF MEETING OF 600 STAFF RESOUNDINGLY VOTED NO CONFIDENCE IN VICE CHANCELLOR LISA ROBERTS (WHOSE PAY IS PUSHING £400K). WE BELIEVE THIS IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE VOTE BY ANY UNI STAFF IN THE HISTORY OF UK HE.
5. REDUNDANCIES ARE A MANAGEMENT CHOICE, NOT A FINANCIAL NECESSITY. THEY EVEN HAVE ALTERNATIVE COSTED PLANS WITH NO CUTS, BUT THINK IT'S EASIER TO GO FOR JOB LOSSES.
6. EXETER IS A FANTASTIC UNI, WITH WORLD CLASS RESEARCH, CREATIVE AND INSPIRING TEACHING, THOUGHTFUL AND IMAGINATIVE COMMUNITY OF STAFF AND STUDENTS. LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY.'

We have recently launched a Visiting Scholar Grant at Rochester to work with the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform. See attached flyer for details! #histmed #fellowship
The History of Medicine Section in the Edward G. Miner Library at the University of Rochester is pleased to announce its first annual Edward C. Atwater Visiting Scholar Grant for the study of materials in the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform.
In the autumn of 1994, Edward C. Atwater, M.D. made the Miner Library the repository for his personal collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets, almanacs, trade cards, printed ephemera and manuscript material pertaining to American "popular medicine." Materials in the Atwater Collection represent the full range of medical self-help among Americans throughout the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. For a full description of the collection and how to search it, visit the History of Medicine’s website.
The Atwater Visiting Scholar Grant provides support to scholars or graduate students to cover the cost of their travel to Rochester, accommodation, and expenses during their time of stay. The award is up to $2,000 for one week of research in any given year.
We welcome applications from all interested researchers currently residing in the United States or Canada, regardless of their institutional association, race, cultural background, ability, sexual orientation, gender, or socioeconomic status. Applications from scholars utilizing traditional methods of archival and bibliographical research are encouraged as are applications from individuals who wish to pursue creative, interdisciplinary, and non-traditional approaches to conducting research using the Edward C. Atwater Collection.

A complete grant application includes:
A research proposal (2 pages, single-spaced, maximum)
Two references
Budget, including proposed dates for research trip
A successful applicant will be expected to share their findings after their visit.
Please submit your proposals and any questions to Anna Smith, Head of History of Medicine Section, anna_smith1@urmc.rochester.edu
