The police departments of NYC, Chicago, and LA all have incredibly disturbing recent history showing that they are not actually controlled by municipal government. Not that things are peachy everywhere else, but these three are really a cut below.

The biting critique of libertarian capitalism, the humor, the complexity of the characters, the dense plotting that hits you in the face with something carefully set up 5 books earlier… not everyone is going to wade through so much RPG game mechanics to find all that, and it’s OK.

They both are. It’s popular to bag on DCC these days, and it’s pretty easy to; book 1 is weak, the prose is “ridiculously” not great, the microgenre is full of slop. I say all of this with love, having read and listened to them all many, many times.

For quite a while-- 50's, 60's, 70's - SF writers generally believed that the future would see an Earth in which national governments took back seats to the UN or other form of world government. I don't think that was narrative convenience, but what felt like reasonable extrapolation.

Now, of course, it seems completely obvious. US high tech has given us a long succession of Gibsonian billionaires, with Musk the apex of the clan. Some of that is self-reinforcing; would Bezos have thought of going to space if T-A hadn't had their own satellite complex?

I remember how exotic and alien Tessier-Ashpool seemed to me in the 80s when the book was new; corporations back then were personless blank entities, and the idea that a global company's family leadership might be perverse, weird, infinitely-indulgent isolates seemed almost Saruman-esque.
