We've had periods too when large numbers of people have assimilated and formed blended ethnic groups - like how the Normans were English within 300 years or so.

This summer Britain burnt. 3000 people died from the heat. Yet this Government is drilling for more gas, despite scientist warnings & it won't make a difference to bills in the UK. We need to double down on renewables, not bend to the wishes of fossil fuel bosses. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The government is set to give the go-ahead for the gas field off the coast of Aberdeen, the BBC understands.

You see the strategy though: they want to privatise the prisons. Then they can imprison pretty much anyone who's homeless or whatever and sell their labour to private enterprise, undermining the unions and workers' positions.

Yes, Iceland are an independent sovereign state. Who also happen to be in the Single Market, the EEA and the Schengen zone, with freedom of movement for people, goods and services. But if the UK did that I'd be screaming about Brexit betrayal and being an EU puppet.

Nathan Cofnas notes but plays down his problem: that those who believe in hereditary biological racism have lower IQs than those who reject it! He puts this down to fashion which means he attracts stupid antisemites & racists for what he would like to be a more elite, less knuckledragger view

Yeah. Not just boomers either - my parents were Silent Generation, grew up in the ruins of WW2 and became adults in the 1950s. The existential shock when you realise all that stuff just ends up going to charity shops or to landfill. It feels like there's no point to life at all.

It's honestly ridiculous. I like all kinds of stuff, but the stuff I like *on here* largely is dependent on what I get to see *on here*, so inferring a character from that is very much skewed.

And sometimes, choice is an illusion. Would you like an Italian, American, French or German/British SUV? These are the same car with what manufacturers call a “top hat” (the panels, interior and badging) Thanks to the huge Stellantis conglomerate… 1. Lancia 2. Jeep 3. Peugeot 4. Opel/Vauxhall

Net migration has fallen from 944,000 to 171,000. Yet that headline conceals major movements in both directions – including substantial emigration by British and EU+ nationals. So, asks Jonathan Portes, what exactly is the problem people want politicians to solve?

Our immigration statistics have served to legimise racism. Reduced net migration was not what people wanted

It's been nearly a year since my son graduated with a First in comp sci from Aston. He's applied to over 300 vacancies. No joy. He did work experience at a local cafe to become a barista. They like him but they can't afford to employ anyone at the moment. He does LeetCode every day. No joy.

Has university become a confidence trick? Spend ten minutes talking to a final-year student about their job search and you might wonder whether university is still worth it. Yet the evidence suggests the answer is more complicated than many headlines imply. Sean Brophy reports

To be honest though, it affects *everyone* because the adults who use social media now have to prove their age to use the platform. Which means identity, which means tracking posts, friend connections and more.

Heck, even the CEO of Anthropic is saying this is the wrong way to go about things. AI, according to an essay he published today, should be about finding new job configurations, and we should be finding ways to be more creative *with* AI, not letting AI be a substitute for creativity.
