The stereotype in China is basically that Uyghurs tend to be backwards extremists, except for some (generally women) who are instead very hot

It's missing all the major newspapers, both of Fairfax (SMH, The Age etc.) and News Corp (The Australian, Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun etc.)

> Donald Trump spoke to a journalist in the White House in 2021 about his desire to acquire Greenland: “I love maps. And I always said, ‘Look at the size of this. It’s massive, and that should be part of the United States.’” www.afr.com/world/europe...

The trouble with maps: Greenland’s allure for Trump is based on an illusion
Greenland’s position in the northern latitudes means the nation’s size and shape is prone to enormous variations in how it is portrayed on global maps.

Most American Jews are Ashkenazi/have Ashkenazi descent (which is more-or-less "European-looking Jew")

This is beside the point, and race/ethnicity isn't really about genetics, but Elon is also very wrong on the genetics as Ashkenazi Jews do have rather distinctive DNA

The $38 shoes are his strongest argument against it overall. If they last at least one third of the life of the sole of a higher quality shoe, you'll be financially better off in the long run with cheap shoes.

Vimes boot theory is stupid anyway and doesn't apply to anything in clothing. It's totally made up and untrue. I don't know what we're talking about anymore, but if someone wants to build a good wardrobe, i think it can be done without shopping at Shein.

"Vimes Boot Theory is a nice little theory that makes people think they're unfairly getting duped by the system. But it's simply not true. I think most people don't know how much it costs to buy and maintain well-made things." Threads: x.com/dieworkwear/... x.com/dieworkwear/...

Not surprising, there's a pattern in recent centuries where those who already mistrust the authorities are radicalised when authorities try to handle epidemics. Healthcare workers were murdered during an ebola outbreak a decade ago.

There's also this rather curious bit from a guy who some might say resembles a hulking great troll observer.co.uk/culture/inte...
A few hours later, he sends me an example of how he’s been using AI. It’s a “hidden role deduction” game he’s working on. At the top is the prompt he put into ChatGPT: “You are five blind lesbian adventurers out for a good night out. Slaying dragons and whatnot. But one of your number is a hulking great troll pretending to be a woman. Find the troll lesbian and then devise an amusing punishment without giving him an erection.”

A wholesome story for nerds: On Saturday, I was signing books at a local bookstore for Independent Bookstore Day. The store had a signing-palooza with new authors every hour; toward the end of my hour, a woman came up and asked what my book was about. "Dictionaries," I said, and she lit up. 1/n

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites. He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him. www.wsj.com/world/china/...

Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

I think a stronger take can be justified: The horrors of the Sino-Japanese War are only integrated into its history is because it serves as one of the founding wars in CCP historiography. It took a number of decades before the CCP cared about what happened in Nanjing.
