We did a fair amount of tactical urbanism in Omaha…to varying degrees of success. Always fun though, and it got some people thinking differently which was the main goal.

My brilliant husband was invited to NYC 15 years ago to talk about his 9/11 flip book & critical media study. He documented how often the media replayed/retraumatized its audience for days on end. He traded his flip books for essays from those impacted by the horrific events that day 25 years ago. ❤️‍🩹

Does replacing parking with bike-lanes hurt restaurant business? Of course not, as this new peer-reviewed STUDY of 15 years of Montreal data showed. ACTUALLY, downtown experienced significant restaurant growth after bike lanes were installed. @momentummag.bsky.social momentummag.com/do-bike-lane...

Heads up South Minneapolis: Sounds like it might be best to avoid 28th/Nicollet right now. Some kind of active shooter situation going on. Metro Transit route 2 is detoured.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath Some costs are savings.

I think we should all be calling our reps inquiring about the amendment they’re working on to prevent a situation like this from ever happening again.

Thanks to @startribune.com for the fun porch story, featuring our Front Porch Fridays event. The final Friday of each month, from 6-8pm we hang out on our porch with drinks and try to get to know more neighbors. It’s been such an easy delightful way to build community. Try it in your area!

Attending the dedication of a new on-street bike parking corral. Real civic pride stuff. Also eating a free donut.
People talking about the new bike parking corral.

A ribbon was cut! Thanks to all who showed up today. This bike corral is one of three, part of a one year, year-round pilot project in St. Paul on Grand Ave. They are at Kowalski’s Market, Dunn Bros Coffee (pictured here) and Shish (installation in the works). Use them and share your feedback!
A green Mac-Grove branded bike corral, full of bikes, is on the street for a ribbon cutting. Someone in a yellow cycling jacket is looking in a pannier and others are gathered on the sidewalk talking about bikes and eating donuts!A selfie taken by a woman in sunglasses and a black cap, mouth open from screaming “yay” about the bike corral and people in the background during a ribbon cutting celebration. A full bike corral and a bunch of people is in the background and in the foreground a woman in blue pants and a black tshirt has two thumbs up. It’s a beautiful sunny day with blue skies dotted with white clouds.

Me too! The city’s new Commercial Corridor grant is renewed and I’d love to help other neighborhoods earmark some of it for bike parking installation, maintenance, and expansion. We’ll talk about it tonight a bit at the ribbon cutting.

See you today at 5pm by Dunn Bros to celebrate the launch of St. Paul’s three new year-round, on-street bike corrals! It’s a pilot project so please use them and share your feedback with us! The new locations are at Dunn Bros, Kowalski’s, and Shish, all in Mac-Grove on the glorious Grand Ave!

Gotta say I’m pretty proud that this all came together in less than a year, from pilot pitch to install. Thanks to all who helped out!!! Quite a different experience here in St. Paul compared to Omaha! (Quite happy we live here now.)

Part of what I saw as an issue with the old policy is that it put too much on a single business rather than the community, since the corrals are a public asset and community project. Now, the community council is the permit holder and go-to for issues to make it less of a burden.

Snow removal and maintenance (along with initial costs of the corral and installation) are funded by a new city Commercial Corridors grant, via the Mac-Grove Community Council and a partnership with Work Now which employs unsheltered folks! Pretty excited that the city entertained my pilot concept!

My therapist isn’t white. I’m currently waiting for her at her office, wondering if she’s running a few minutes late due to another client, or has been kidnapped by the feds. It’s really so so hard to know how to live these days in MN. Did I make her leave her house? Should I have asked for remote?

Give your mail carrier a whistle. I just did and it was a neat convo. We’re all doing what we can to form a safety shield from the brutality. Form a crowd. Stay loud.
A white 3D printed whistle with red plastic symbols instructing how to alert your neighbors you need help. Blow 3 times if you see anything wrong and blow constantly if you need help!

Found out yesterday that the pilot project I pitched for year-round, on-street bike corrals in St Paul has been 100% approved with a ribbon cutting in May to kick off Bike Month! (I’m so busy on the ground helping neighbors that I hardly had time to read the good email I got yea!)

Just tried a new cathartic thing: called a rep who was telling us to calm down and asked her aide to pass along this message: “AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! We’re being occupied and slaughtered ahhhhhh!!!!! Thanks.” (Tell your spouse before yelling or they may be scared. Sorry @scottbl8ke.bsky.social )

Electric bicycles, and shared electric bicycles in particular, are a revolutionary transportation technology. Forward-looking cities should be building out the infrastructure necessary to make cycling safe and convenient for everyone who wants to do it.

A guy who just purchased some beer is unlocking his bike from the gas meter outside a liquor store. Forced to lock to not a rack.

And another today downtown at a Commercial Corridor grant meeting. (Part of the grant $ is going to bike parking!)
A bicycle and a scooter are locked to some random fencing downtown St. Paul, since there are no bike racks.

How do we all become conscientious objectors to paying federal taxes that they will just use against us?! I have zero interest in supporting this dangerous chaos. Paying to support a Dept of War that is literally being aimed at civilians here?! No thanks.
