I'd say it heavily depends on the author position: always if first author, rarely if middle author. I also recommend relevant references when I spot they are missing. That said, in recent papers, I have been checking the existence (not the accuracy) of certain references due to growing LLM use.

Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation! How feasible is it to find enough time (and engage enough colleagues) to combine a systematic scoping review with expert opinion synthesis before drawing the DAG? Reseach questions can become obsolete quickly. I'd really appreciate your advice.

Just finished reading 'Epidemiology: An Introduction' (3rd ed.) by KJ Rothman, KF Huybrechts and EJ Murray (@epiellie.bsky.social). What an excellent book. I especially loved those little boxes explaining, for instance, why p-values in the Table 1 of RCTs make no sense. Congrats for the great work!

We need more "unfunded" research, not less. Or rather, we need more "core" funding and much less project based funding. Then universities can *invest* in core research infrastructure (including people), reduce precarity, and focus on growing and retaining talent.
