I've wondered many times if it's that people who feel driven by a desire for equity & social justice are more likely to trust what 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 true even in the face of hard data to the contrary. One of the biggest fights I get from folks is "tech addiction must be real because it FEELS real".
