My daughter noticed her first "King Charles" head toonie in her allowance on Sunday. Dated 2024, I buy her allowance coins by the roll, so I guess I've had it for a while. Still, felt "the passing of an age." No more Lizzie on the coins.

The NDP should take a long view, and not despair of a Poilievre government. Aim to form the opposition as the only left-leaning party that isn't a cult of personality. There will be an election after Poilievre is elected. Aim to form government there.

Canada has a population 25% larger than California; and has about 80% the GDP per capita of Mississippi in $USD. It wants single payer health care, and strong gun control. If annexed it would be the single largest player in the Electoral College, and the House. Annexing Canada is a DNC play.

#ttrpg #pugmire This is Princess Rose Bernese, from my kid's Pugmire game last year. My kid! We called her "the tin can" because she had an impossibly high Defense score by the end. Also had to emphasize "Princess is your father's nickname for you; not a job." Art by @aphoticmoth.bsky.social

#ttrpg #pugmire Our campaign last year had two wizards: Biff, the glass cannon pitbull... and Carmel Labrador. Carmel was played as an academic, who could barely deign to adventure, and mostly wanted to read every book he found. A great character. Illustration by @aphoticmoth.bsky.social

Random thought: is expecting employers to provide health insurance for their employees a legacy of feudalism? You are sworn to the land-owning noble, who in exchange for your fealty, ensures the essentials of life for you?

Suggestion for my American Democratic Party affiliated friends. Have a "policy convention" in late summer of 2026. Get all your candidates together, and spend a week publicly explaining what your legislative priorities will be if elected. Show the American people that the legislature can be good.

Idea for taking down Doug Ford: Recruit Kirsty Duncan (Fed. Minister, MP for his riding) to run against him directly in the provincial election. Possible downside, it will clearly tie the Fed and Prov liberals together clearly... but that's already being done: Live with it. Doug is worse.

Realization that every dollar we spend on rent and mortgage, is a dollar we can't spend on fun discretionary things. Art, Music, Food, Drink, Books... if we feed the Rent monster, instead... it goes away. but we never get rich. Feels like a sad allegorical kids book.

This is your friendly reminder: conventional media requires either subscriptions, or eyeballs (for advertisers) to keep publishing/broadcasting. You have no obligation to subscribe/read/watch what you feel is politically craven or toxic. In fact not subscribing/reading/watching makes it go away.

Flipping the 416 ain't nothing. Whole lot of cabinet ministers and a substantial portion of the majority go down in that event. And given demographic similarities, we'd probably be seeing opposition wins in inner 905 suburbs, at least, as well as Hamilton, Ottawa, etc.

Sir Tainley @sir-tainley.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
#onpoli question. Every political party is a coalition of different interests. Imagine a youngish family: parents around 40, at least one is an immigrant; they live on the fringe of the 905. Both work full time. Their finances are "prisoners of the home mortgage" Who will they vote for?

So everyone knows: I don't support a 'carbon tax'. Like every Joe who doesn't pay attention, I don't want to pay more taxes on day-to-day expenses. I support a strong 'carbon rebate': rewarding me for making carbon-smart decisions in the market place. These are totally different things.

@gmbutts.bsky.social I have a question about the internals of Canadian Political parties. Whose job would it be for MPs, or candidates, to get on a new social network (like Bluesky). Are there memos from the central party? Are they allowed to figure it out on their own? How's it happen?

I can't think of a more strategic nightmare for Republicans politically. Canada either admits as 8 Vermonts (and there goes the Senate) or a giant second California (and there goes the House). They've got such a fine electoral balance right now... why would you mess with that?

Dickens published Tale of Two Cities in 1859. It is set 79-67 years earlier. If he published in 2024... it would be set 1945-1957. Which is actually be a really good time span for a historical novel. Set, almost anywhere.

I wish to file a complaint the creator of this language: See, Saw, Seed, Sod, Scene, and Soar... are all verbs. And mean totally different things! And conjugate into each other without any predictability for meaning! Or possibility of explaining why it's wrong. This is unacceptable.

This week, in Toronto, we should remember 1837. When citizens of Ontario were so upset with the inside dealing of the colonial government, they took up arms to demand provincial government responsible to the voters. There should be more done to commemorate this.
