Word of advice folks, avoiding being a couple minutes late to a tag rugby match (thanks Piccadilly line) is not worth impaling your calf over. In case anyone was on the fence about it (ironically, like my calf)

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan @london.gov.uk · 08/08/2026
Climate denial is getting louder. Reality is getting harder to ignore. When parks are brown, rivers are shrinking and firefighters are battling blazes across the globe, governments must accelerate climate action, not slow it down.

This burning summer is the proof: the voices of climate denial aren’t just delusional, they’re deadly | Sadiq Khan
Look at our blazing forests and parched cities. Green policies aren’t a ‘luxury’, and we can’t burn more oil and gas. People need the truth, says London mayor Sadiq Khan

* The continued talk of Zeus' law * Agamemnon's design, not as the heroic leader of the war, but as an evil warlord (spinal column) * The question of why doesn't Odysseus want to go home

I personally felt that he had actually done a good job of foreshadowing the twist, to the point where I wasn't particularly surprised when it was said: * The sacking of the coastal village * The imagery we see in the flashbacks to the sacking - beheading statue, soldiers like bats in the dark...

Insane new research. Scientists gave asthma patients free electric stoves to replace their gas stoves, then checked to see if symptoms improved. Not only did symptoms improve, ditching gas was *better than medicine.* Details in today's newsletter: www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/electric-s...

Researchers used electric stoves to treat asthma. It worked.

This, in particular. Increasingly of the view that government policy towards universities is the test case of whether it really has a wider economic policy.

Climate is THE test I use for assessing whether a party is serious about governing. Anti-NZ stances tell me that 1) you are willing to ignore warnings from scientists 2) you do not understand public sentiment 3) you lack vision and ambition in a field where the UK can genuinely excel

One of the lessons of the last two years is that Labour urgently needs to stop being afraid of its own shadow. Burnham should appoint whoever he thinks would be the best Chancellor and throw his authority behind them. The Daily Mail will try to kill them anyway. So just govern.

I fear as soon as we start talking the feasibility of "ah but they could never actually do this" kind of misses the point that this sort of policy should not even be entertained at all. It should be shamed, shunned, pushed to the fringes and called out for what it is.

I suspect a lot of it comes back to the "there will be pain" speech. You can't essentially tell the public to expect austerity and then be shocked when they see you as an austerity government.

possibly the most rotten failing of Keir Starmer is that this is true: he did come in and genuinely turn around the Labour Party on the issue of antisemitism - but leaves it more morally compromised than he found it, with trans rights being rolled back and the racist far right emboldened

No. He has not shown interest in the decision making and tough calls that are required. The Government is currently functioning as individual departments, without a unifying decision maker. He is not governing.

This is flat wrong from Unite. It’s just not true there’s been ‘almost no thought for jobs, skills and national security’. There’s been a huge amount of thought on all these issues and a decision has been made that jobs, skills, and security all benefit from a faster clean energy transition.

Not to say that there aren't other factors at play - Labour's gain isn't all from green/lib, and James is right, the differential turn it data will be really interesting - but there was a sizeable squeeze from the left, when the right block *grew* but remained splintered

Simon Norris @simonnorris.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Not 100% sure on this 2024: Right block: 17k votes, 42% Labour: 18k, 45% Green/lib: 4k, 11% 2026 B-E: 59% turnout Right block: 19k, 43% Labour: 25k, 55% Green/lib: 500, 1% Change: Right block: +2k, +1pp Labour: +7k, +10pp Green/lib: - 3.5k, -10pp That looks pretty squeezy to me

I'd be curious to see how many of the 43 non-Burnham coop MPs get called up to Ministerial positions
000
Simon Norris @simonnorris.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
I'm not suggesting that the coop manifesto is a usable blueprint for government - it's 47 pages long and, as mentioned, leaves gap. It was clearly written to signal what a coop bloc within the Labour party would push for in government, but it certainly gives an idea of direction in some policy areas
100
Simon Norris @simonnorris.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
.. but it could be a template for a community-focused counter attack against reform. I'm personally curious and open to the idea that cooperativism could provide answers to the questions that a Reform-curious public are asking

So if people want to guess what Burnham might do in power, this might be a helpful place to look for a guess. Admitedly it's a little bit single-issue, focusing on cooperative movement priorities, so there are some big gaps not addressed (defence, proper tax policy).. party.coop/wp-content/b...

Which does suggest an early core of ideological support in the PLP for him to build off of, and already we're seeing some of the priorities that Burnham has mentioned - localism, public ownership of utilities, align strongly with the Coop party's 2024 manifesto

Simon Norris @simonnorris.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
If Burnham goes on to claim the top spot, he would become the UK's first Cooperative party Prime Minister, surpassing their previous-highest achievement of *checks notes* Ed Balls
