this is not to say that everyone on mastodon is like that, not at all. But everyone who is like that is on mastodon. and obviously you don't get replies (contrarian or nitpicking or notice-me-senpai or otherwise) from people who are _not_ inclined to nitpick, so the reply guys are self-selecting
020
Stuart Langridge @sil.kryogenix.org · 28/09/2026
yeah. If a person is reflexively contrarian and they're mostly in tech and responding to tech speech (which is what you're saying and getting responses to) then they're probably on Mastodon. (If they're anti-authority about politics they're here on Bluesky.) Also open source is anti authority too
120
Stuart Langridge @sil.kryogenix.org · 28/09/2026
because Mastodon didn't take off among the general public. Therefore being there at all is a small act of contrarianism. This doesn't mean that all people on Mastodon are reflexively inclined to look for reasons why an authority can be shown to be wrong, but many who are like that are on Mastodon.

This artwork was created over the past year by a local Birmingham artist collective who wanted to bring unty from discord by repurposing the divisive Nationalist flags into a massive Brummie Reunion Jack. Suffice it to say, the inspiration for Goldship's magnificent work has not taken it well.

Come on down to the Council House for International Day of Birmingham, see the Re-Union Jack ♥️ #OneBrum Goldship have repurposed dozens of dirty & torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts to create a huge Union Jack, adorned with the names of people who have called Birmingham home
Photo of artwork description
GOLDSHIP Re-Union Jack 2026

Repurposed polyester flags/Mixed media.

Re-Union Jack is an ongoing community art project conceived by GoldShip, the creative duo of textile sculptor Clare Elisabeth and event producer Sam Shipman.

Repurposing dozens of dirty and torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts, Clare and Sam, alongside countless contributors from the wider community, pieced them together to create a huge Union Jack.

The flag was then transformed over several months by countless more contributors into a visual celebration of the people and stories that have helped shape the West Midlands. Across its surface are the names of influential Midlanders, spanning from the Anglo-Saxon Beorma, after whom Birmingham takes its name, through to the present day. Each has a connection to migration, immigration or the positive influence of people who have made the West Midlands their home.

Together, these names reflect the region's extraordinary history as a vibrant melting pot of cultures, ideas, talent and communities - and the positive contribution that migration has made to its identity.

The flag has since been signed in black by many of the people whose names feature upon it as a collective endorsement of its message of unity, inclusion and community.Photo of huge Union (Jack) Flag on lighting truss in the hall of the Council House.
It's glorious and bears many names upon it of the people of Birmingham

a small part of me even today thinks this is a magnificently impactful and profound ending. I reckon if I'd have rolled that out when I was at uni I'd have thought it was on a par with friends, Romans, countrymen

I am very disappointed that this is not a thing. Not because of the subject matter, or the characters who I don't actually recognise, but... I would very much like to see a world where I can get egg and chips in pubs. Specifically my mum's egg and chips from the late 80s which we had every Monday

There is always supporting their private freelance work, but (and this is a problem with the Dispatch as well) I don’t really want to be further funding Substack who are (a) ok with the fash and (b) yet another big tech American firm who are good at marketing. But that’s not journos’ fault. Unsure.

We’ve got a couple of decent journalists here in the people’s republic of Brum, and I know of a couple in other cities, who are at Reach publications. I honestly don’t know whether I should be supporting their good work for these papers or sacking them off in favour of the Birmingham Dispatch et al

Yeah. I was thinking about “people using Facebook instead of having a website” (and trying to convince them not to). I didn’t think about “people de facto forced into using Facebook to tell people about the website they’ve had for decades”. My apologies again for that, and my sympathies!

Stuart Langridge @sil.kryogenix.org · 16/09/2026
Fair. My answer in the old days was “they search and Google puts you up top “ but… not any more. I wasn’t complaining at you, promise. It’s terrible that Facebook have taken something so easy — pointing to another place — and held it to ransom. Sorry if I came across as blaming you!

(a) if I want to buy “ugly thick 1980s NHS glasses” then Poundland sell a bunch already (b) it is so good that “pervert glasses” has caught on as a phrase just like “glasshole” did and for the same reason. I wonder if anybody who makes them will recognise this? Doubt it.

In web development teams across the land, someone wrote up a task which said “you know Reader Mode? that browsers do to make a clean easy way to read pages? Make sure that’s broken on our website so it doesn’t work.” And then a developer implemented it. I wonder if a little bit of their souls died.
