I would suggest sending some eels, as I hear that used to be a really good way to get religious leaders on your side. But now they’re endangered. So maybe just some eel art? With appropriate alt text, of course.

I hear the same arguments in Canada too. But almost our entire population lives in a narrow strip along the border, and about half (18 million people) lives in the Windsor-Quebec corridor, which is just over 1,100 km long. There are big cities but also a lot of farms, villages and cottage country.

From a Canadian perspective, we just can’t be bothered. When he threatened it, we laughed and reminded ourselves of all the chokeholds to Great Lakes traffic that are entirely within Canadian territory. Today we yawned and got back to finding Canadian businesses to support.

“The Humiliation of Pierre Polievre Continues” (Globe and Mail). Others call him the intergalactic disco cowboy and the Whinestone Cowboy. If you’re cosplaying a cowboy to call out “woke” culture, this leads to comparisons with Liberace, Joey from Friends, Homer Simpson and The Village People.
(Clockwise from top left) Images of Joey from Friends, Canadian Conservative in the Party leader Pierre Polievre and Homer Simpson, all in white cowboy suits, and Liberace in a sparkly white suit.

Problem right now is that the feds do give money to the provinces for those things but some provinces squander the money on pet projects like the Therme Spa in Toronto and deals for their developer buddies and there is no accountability. Is it enough? No. But who wants to waste more?

It was a horrible accident and the CEO’s response was pathetic (I’m from a unilingual Anglo family who took only core French until I decided I wanted to be in government so became bilingual). Sadly, we don’t seem capable of responding to those 2 things at once.

Small comfort but the Church in Canada has a somewhat more liberal view. Same sex marriages are not required to be carried out in all parishes, but individual pastors/churches are welcome to perform them, and - as a general principle - they are encouraged.
