Saying LLMs are worthless/pernicious because they sometimes make mistakes & is causing a general decline in reading skills (true) is like saying Google Maps is worthless/pernicous just because it sometimes gives you bad directions & has caused a general decline in human navigation skills (also true)

With 100 millions single cell gene expression measurements, using >1000 drugs across 60 cell line models, Tahoe-100M is larger than all public single-cell transcriptomic data combined. And it is 50x larger than all drug-perturbed single-cell data put together.

Btw - this is another case where my frequent point that not just IF but also PubMed/PMC are obstacles to innovation applies: if a journal does a novel form of post-hoc change that doesn't fit in PubMed's rigid framework, it's not registered (so is disincentivized)

Part of the reason people are glum about AI is that researchers themselves represent the goal as full equivalence for human agency (“AGI”). While I get the theoretical interest, I think what most customers want (and what we’ve really produced so far) is closer to “prosthetics for thinking.”

The martian scientists were evaluating the conditions on earth based on their own understanding of life-sustaining qualities. earth's gravity disqualified any possibility of larger life forms. earth's oxygen meant there would be uncontrolled fires. funny how biases work :)

Lovely read. Some obscure childhood stories disproportionately inform our current understanding of the world. I'm reminded of a short story I read in high school; it was a scientific record from Mars evaluating the earth as a livable planet. spoiler alert: Earth Failed!

All I'm saying is, you can't turn back the clock. Once a piece of tech is out, good or bad, it's here to stay. We can (and should) push for more moderation, regulation, etc while you arm your students with the best practices and critical thinking skills to deal with it. Not fishing for a response✌️

Shubhra Agrawal @shubhra-a.bsky.social · 25/12/2024
But the examples you're giving? Students will ALWAYS try and find ways to reduce the effort. Google search/wikipedia/quora was my generation's shortcut. But our teachers pointed out the holes and we learned how to balance speed with depth. Fact check wiki info etc. It'll happen with AI tools too 🤞

Shubhra Agrawal @shubhra-a.bsky.social · 25/12/2024
And policy makers who accept that this cat (idiot AI agent) is out of the bag now. Tantrums and fear mongering would do nothing except push your students away. The internet is a lying machine, social media is a lying machine. Arming students with critical thinking skills? Priceless

There are legitimate concerns around how learning methods will need to be adapted in the age of freely available "AI agents" that are also pretty idiotic. And how fast. Not trying to belittle any of that. But those changes will always be driven by educators (contd.)

It's time to lean into the idea of using chatbots as coding assistants! imo focus should be on how to arrive at a reasonable solution: when to ask for tooling suggestions, vs when to ask for approaches vs when to ask for code snippets etc. there's absolutely a place for this early on!
