I ran Spirit of the Century for Free RPG Day in 2010, and I'm now setting up to run my second ever convention game, a one-shot of Blades '68. I'm old, I'm nervous, and I'm 100% convinced that my players (who have only heard of D&D and have no expectations) will be absolutely rabid. How exciting!

At some point in the past five or so years, I increased my rates to what I then considered almost comically high, and still got the same amount of jobs. Doubling your current rate is honestly probably the minimum you should do.

I've recently realised that the reason why I like to GM is because I'm _great_ at setting things up, managing energy, balancing disagreements. I'd love to DM a table of DMs, sounds like this is designed for me!

I've just downloaded all of the Blades '68 materials and I'm already planning a one-shot for the board game charity I volunteer for. I'm intrigued as to where on the Austin Powers <-> Day of the Jackal spectrum they'll fall - not to mention the Doctor Who <-> Hammer spectrum.

I've been accepted as a volunteer for a small charity using tabletop games to break down barriers and build friendships. My first session was tonight, and it was great. There's a lot of bad in the world, but people are worth spending time on - and tabletop games are a great way to spend that time!

The secret benefit of having a house rabbit is making friends with all the local birds by helping insulate their nests 🐇🥬 🐰 🐦

A tiny sparrow sits on top of a wooden fence with a pluck of rabbit fur in his break. The sky behind is blue with wispy clouds, and a vigorous courgette plant grows against the fence.

She shuffled through the remaining papers and frowned. "Don't you think it's weird," she said, "that they added an addendum insisting we include a transforming cyborg bug-themed Japanese superhero with a motorcycle to the contract?" He shrugged. "Not really. It's a common rider."

This is an interesting concept, not one borne out by my recent visit to the Design Museum in Copenhagen which explicitly used the work of the School of Furniture Design and Interior Decoration at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts as its core.

Critical Queer gave me one of their dice holders, and it might be the cutest beholder (be-dice-holder?) I've ever seen. I'm going to call him Monty.

A pride flag coloured beholder model, which serves as a dice holder by putting one of each of a set of dice in the eye sockets

Fun session of D&D5.5e last night, despite novice DM choosing to split the party in the mists and attack one player on their own. An hour and a half of the rest of us as spectators, which, whilst it could have been better spent, was about the level of spoons I actually had after the weekend!

The effect for *you* is so important too. Not just volume, but those individual personal connections when someone's eyes light up and they're so excited to start playing. Do you have any UK contacts who could be your table helper in future? That could help you spend more time on the bits you love.

Your presence as marketing is an intangible but important part of being there; yes as pure visibility, but it also cements in the mind of those gamers who saw you, "this is the kind of game studio that appears at impressive events!"
