Child poverty is projected to rise from 31 per cent in 2023-24 to 34 per cent by 2029-30. But policy can make a big difference - with the two-child limit abolished, the rate would drop immediately, and be no higher in 2029-30 than 2024-25.
In all three of our economic scenarios, the
child poverty rate in 2029-30 is higher than in 2024-25 (by 2-4 percentage points). In our
policy scenario, however, with the two-child limit abolished, the rate would instead drop
immediately, and be no higher in 2029-30 than 2024-25, at 31 per cent – though this would
still be higher than in 2023-24 and higher than the average over Conservative-led 2011 to
2023 (29 per cent).

This a really interesting interview piece with Amanda Pritchard. Lots to takeaway and many similarities between health and education. I endorse her view that buying new solutions is easy, its the implementation and consistency of leadership that is key.

Our new polling shows that school leaders are having to cut budgets, and 46% reported using pupil premium to plug gaps elsewhere. Meanwhile, less than 10% of school leaders say pupil premium funding is enough to fully support eligible pupils. Urgent action is needed 👇

Fascinating graph that I’ve never seen before - govt spending vs tax for age groups from the FT
Britain’s tax and spend dilemma

Some excellent graphical analysis from the FT as part of the wider conundrum facing the country with a rapidly growing ageing population.

Accompanying the news that “the UK’s public debt burden has surged faster than that of any other big advanced economy since the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic, helping drive up interest payments and limiting the country’s capacity to spend more on defence and care for an ageing population”.

As of last year, more tax revenue was spent on servicing government debt than on education.

The coalition government's decision to abolish the Audit Commission, which was responsible for appointing auditors for public bodies, is now widely recognised as a mistake, causing a massive audit backlog in English councils.

Sam Freedman at #ASCL2025: government departments must "tell the story" with policies - education leaders won't know what is expected of them or what the government is aiming for if the narrative isn't clear. It is unusual for there to be no white paper for the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill.
