Whenever ATProto decentralization comes up, people either don’t know it exists, or they have lots of misconceptions about it. Then they get referred to ATProto.com which is completely alien to the non technically inclined user.

I’m not sure I agree; while decentralization may not be the most mainstream concept it’s definitely a good selling point and ultimately any lack of enthusiasm amongst “regular users” is because of a lack of understanding.

Maybe I should have been clear, when I switch Appviews/CDN I retain the ability to interact with everyone else. It all works as you would expect. And when their services come back online, they will see my interactions in their notifications like nothing ever happened.

Whenever Bluesky goes down I never lose access to my account, because I use Blacksky's appview and BlueAT's CDN. It's all modular and completely decentralized from Bluesky. Non Bluesky users can even take advantage of these services if they use a different client like Witchsky.app

This is not an issue btw, just something people need to be made aware of! I love the modularity of ATProto.

You can be on a different PDS but still use Bluesky's social-app and appview, or you can still be on Bluesky's PDS and use Blacksky's appview, etc etc. For the average person, the decentralization is much more invisible compared to Mastodon where every server is it's own contained website.

You're right, but I think people get confused by the term decentralization in this case. Most people's first exposure to it is Mastodon, where every server runs the same software and they all just talk to each other, they're all very self contained, whereas ATProto is a much more abstract concept

Arguably the AT Protocol's biggest issue right now is a lack of awareness to the fact that you can decentralize your account from Bluesky (the company). They have not done a good job explaining it to the layperson. I hope they start doing that more often because the ecosystem is blossoming.

They all talk to each other constantly? That's how the ATProtocol works. I'm talking to you from Blacksky's "MyATProto" server right now! Many of the posts you see on this app everyday are from people on different PDS'.

What are you talking about? There are plenty of large PDS’ out there. Blacksky, Northsky, EuroSky, and plenty of other smaller but multi-user niche PDS’.

Yeah there is no defending that, but that’s standard behavior for any multi-billion dollar company. Nintendo is still the least evil out of all of the evil game companies.

To be fair they are no where near as bad as they used to be. Back in the early 2010s Nintendo would literally copyright strike gameplay videos. They had a program where you were allowed to upload them if you shared the monetization money with Nintendo, which is absolutely insane.

I actually had that version of the game. It has a different back cover on the cartridge case than the retail version. The “splategy guide” was basically useless even back in 2018 when I bought it. Came with some cool stickers though!

It doesn’t matter if reactionaries and Threads users don’t like Bluesky, because eventually there WILL be a killer app on the protocol that will introduce them to it. Focus on protocol, focus on existing users and kill the cringe marketing campaigns.

Also it’s worth noting that Sony is able to sell at a loss due to the locked down nature of the PS ecosystem, the Steam Machine is just a PC and the reward is most likely not feasible for Valve

The economies of scale I think is the primary difference here. Sony has much larger production volumes and longer relationships with the chip manufacturers. Valve is going to be making a lot less Steam Machines than the average console manufacturer.

To be fair with Valve, it was obviously not meant to be $1200, but every single OEM is getting screwed over by the memory manufacturers. That's not Valve's fault, it's SKHynix, Samsung, and Micron who is causing the problem for the entire industry!

for a project the size of Godot, this is about as good as you can reasonably get. if you prohibit AI entirely, it'll just lead to people not disclosing it, which is worse for the engine in the long run. please consider the realities of maintaining a FOSS project this size before blasting them.

They're using AI to "save money" (I assume) but in reality that's going to cost them more when it comes time to actually make prototypes; PLUS, you are alienating the very same customer base who would be willing to spend the money on a product. People want flip phones to escape AI and modern tech!

That is super cool looking! Yeah, idk what they are thinking with the Callback, it's a nice idea in theory, but for such a small niche company it's going to be impossible for them to actually get it into production. I don't think they're intentionally scamming but rather they're in over their head
