Gordon Lyons, our communities minister, saying that arts festivals have to represent all political views is a baul take. Take it all the way, Gordon. Are you going to welcome Irish language and queer politics representation at Orangefest? And don't even think about complaining about the Wolfe Tones.

You can’t even describe this as insanity. It’s too deliberate, too calculated. This is evil expressed in a landscape.

In NI issues of racism against Muslim (in particular) immigrants are live and frequent. How to understand that Lionel Shriver is being invited to speak at a local lit festival, promoting her new book about immigration? She has never been unclear about her position on this.

Anyone know how likely it is that the motorway blockades in Belfast will happen next week? In the past couple of years our right-wingers have relied on the south's right-wingers for disruptive activities, and they're tied up at the minute. Hoping I can get to work...

Watched the Bruce Springsteen film. I liked it but I would guess you'd need to be a Bruce fan. Specifically a fan of Nebraska. I was expecting it to span a bit more of his career I think! But an excellent performance from Jeremy Allen White and I liked Jeremy Strong in it too.

An early Christmas present for those of us in the #KidLitUK community who've been waiting YEARS for the other shoe to finally drop. Harper Collins knew all about it. They paid off staff to keep their mouths shut. Shame on them, shame on him, and good riddance.

I am trying to imagine a reason why no contemporary YA writers from NI were asked to appear in this documentary, or were even mentioned in it. Particularly writers like Sue Divin, whose debut draws on Kevin and Sadie. I don't normally complain about snubs but this one really bothered me.

Is business that bad Michael? Disgraceful
Disgusting comments from Michael Deane, local chef & owner of various restaurants (Deanes, Meatlocker, beanes @ Queens)

“Dine out tonight support your local restaurant who stay loyal to its people and its produce Hospitality Ulster

Britain has become addicted to the app economy. Tap a button, and dinner, groceries, or a ride home magically appear. But here's the uncomfortable truth nobody wants to say out loud: when you order Deliveroo, Just Eat, or Uber, you're not just ordering food or transport you're effectively inviting a stranger, often an undocumented one right to your front door.

Think about it. Once upon a time, the milkman left a couple of bottles on your doorstep. You knew his name, his family, his round. Now, an anonymous Deliveroo rider pulls up outside your house, logs your exact location, and disappears into the night with your data. Who are they? Where did they come from? What checks were done? You don't know. And you're not supposed to ask.”

I was at the Trans Day of Remembrance service that Mike showed up to, many years ago. Clearly it didn't make much of an impression. It did on me. I remember how grateful people were that he had been there, how much hope it gave them. I wonder how they're feeling today. I wonder if he cares.

Looks like Your Party have a tiny window of opportunity to decide where they stand on trans issues 🙄. This reminds me of NI21. Can I suggest anarchy as an alternative? I don't mean in a Russell Brand way. More in a 'Let's not totally despair and remember that we can do lots of things ourselves' way.

And when John Boyne says in his Telegraph piece that writers aren’t meant to “denigrate, insult and push people to a point where those that are emotionally vulnerable might not survive their attacks”, all I can say is that he wrote the words below.

When people ask me if I have any good stories from when I used to interview rock stars for a living my mind often goes a bit blank, and to be honest a lot of it was quite ordinary and unremarkable, but on the other hand there is this.
24 years ago I was sent to a London pub by a newspaper to interview and drink whisky (no “e” over here) with Lemmy, who was in the band Motorhead and, before that, slightly less famously, Hawkwind and, before that, much less famously, Sam Gopal. We had a good chat: about being from the part of the Midlands north of the River Trent, about books, and about roadying for Hendrix in the mid-60s (him, not me; I was minus nine at the time). When the record company PR sidled over to tell me my time was up, Lemmy waved him away. “No, no, I’m enjoying this,” he said, commandingly. I realised at this point that I had another question I’d been meaning to ask but hadn’t. “Are you scared of anything?” I said to Lemmy. “Nothing,” he replied. Then he paused and frowned for a moment, as if an idea had suddenly occurred to him. “Oh, maybe snakes,” he said. “It’s because they’ve got no shoulders.”

To be fair, this is exactly consistent with what terfs have wanted from the start: the erasure of trans people from all public places. I have a friend who was kicked out of both the men's and women's toilets in a university students' union on the same night. Years ago. EHRC merely catching up.
