🧪An exciting new preprint offers insights into how SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses can acquire cleavage motifs for the cellular protease furin. A thread on the importance of the furin motif in the SARS-CoV-2 spike and its possible origins.🧵

Happy to share our new paper! 🦇 While ACE2 gene has been extensively studied in Asian horseshoe bats, data on European and African species remain limited. Here, we report ACE2 orthologs from two African ones and examine the entry of several sarbecoviruses! 🔗 journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Novel African Rhinolophus bat ACE2 sequences reveal the determinants of Afro-Eurasian sarbecovirus entry | Journal of Virology
As putative natural reservoirs of sarbecoviruses, including SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, Rhinolophus bats play a critical role in the emergence of zoonotic coronaviruses, making it essential to understand...

My replies are perpetually full of anti-vaxxers these days telling me about polio vaccines. Not shockingly, most of what they are saying is wrong. Luckily, I trained with Vincent Racaniello & he taught me a few things about poliovirus. So let’s discuss the king of the Picornaviridae👇🏻

Wonderful meeting was over. The coronavirologists got together, and I heard many fascinating talks. #CSHApandemic I'm glad I can ask questions and talk directly to authors who developed amazing virus research that I was impressed by when I read their papers in the past. Please visit Japan again🇯🇵
