despite the well-known propensity of the dictatorship for Nazi memorabilia and ideology, and despite their deployment of classic antisemitic tropes. The reasons why are clear: 1) the victims were left-wing; 2) memorializing them does not in any way aid the project of dispossessing Palestinians.

During Argentina’s “dirty war,” the military dictatorship killed or disappeared tens of thousands of people. Somewhere between 2-3000 of those were Jews, about five to ten times more than their share of the population. This was not called “the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust…”

God I fucking hate these people. Here’s my whole spiel again defector.com/a-blue-wave-...
When I was coming up through undergrad as a poli sci major (ended up switching to IT for grad school and career, thank god) in the first Obama term, we - and I mean liberal staffers-in-training - were taught to view American politics as unfailingly stable and basically liberal, with three facts offered as proof. Not even proof! They were, you must understand, clearly articulated, immutable laws of political physics:
1.) The federal bureaucracy was vast, heavily unionized, and basically permanent below the cabinet level. This ensured continued function of government even after big election swings.
2) Voters would actively revolt with tremendous force against any party which threatened, even obliquely, to cut entitlements — Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP. Once you gave people a treat you couldn't take it away without consequences.
3.) The Supreme Court would never overturn its precedents (could you imagine the disrespect to history?), and would slowly over time only serve to enshrine more and greater civil protections as constitutional guarantees.was the resilient machine of government, these things would never change, and not only was it absurd but it was kind of dangerous to act as though they might - because of the gerontocratic systems of seniority and patronage in professional politics, the Democratic leadership was rife (and still is rife) with people who were present to get their asses kicked so hard by Ronald Reagan, they came to believe his basic perspective on America and government had to become the starting point for any position. If you wanted better funded public works, higher taxes, less policing, whatever, you were insane, and you were going to get schooled again by the right. You had to go a third way: Government that does more with less.
It has been the great grim spectacle of my life to see each of those assumed laws - the fundamental safety nets beneath neoliberal governance - systematically, directly, completely destroyed. The precision and thoroughness has been breathtaking. The Democrats are in their version of hell, now.
And I believe the Democratic Party drummed out all capacity to even imagine a world beyond those tenets long ago. They still cannot believe that what is happening is happening, and they're more hostile to the suggestion that it is than they are to fascists (history, here, repeating itself. They - congressional Democrats - see themselves essentially as customer service managers; they do not lead and they do not build. Their job is to make sure the government works without voters ever having to think about how or why. They certainly don't want to be noticeable.I think a lot about why Schumer remains Democratic leader. The bleak probability is that nobody else wants the position; you could say that's because it's a thankless one, but I think the more plausible reason is because leadership in the legislature necessarily implies a forfeiture of any ambition to be POTUS.
If the party thinks you have juice as a leader, the legislature serves as a finishing school first and foremost: You'll be funneled toward a senate seat for one or two terms and be given important committee assignments to lend your presidential campaign some legitimacy (pure shitheel Elisa Slotkin is in the middle of this process currently). But if you're still there after 12 years, you've probably fucked up. No self-respecting model UN geek who went through the party's pipeline is going to throw in that towel unless they are well and truly washed.
And Schumer is the most washed of them all.
It's ironic, one of the romantic ideas they sold us about American politics was that, unlike parliamentary systems in Europe and elsewhere, we're supposedly quite stable - but only in the sense that in the UK, for example, the parties are far more willing to give leadership the boot if they fuck up (because the PM is meaningfully the executive as well as legislative party leader).
What's clear now, obviously, is that American liberalism wasn't more stable, it was just more complacent, more willing to buckle.
And it has.Anyway as sympathetic as l am to calls for "no amnesty", the prosecution of all these Nazi ghouls, and the packing of the SCOTUS, I am no fool. Chuck Schumer would literally lay down his life before he admitted, through impeachment and legal proceedings, that his grand and amiable Team of Rivals dream has died.
His Democratic Party already ushers through Nazi federal judges regularly, they will Respect The Court and bow to its legitimacy.
He will absolutely keep the chairs warm for the next fascists. The fascists we have will go on to make lavish amounts of money on TV and speaking circuits. He and his leadership will continue to yearn for bonhomie with them, more than anything else. Impunity, impunity, impunity. They cannot and will not be part of any forward motion in this country.

They tell us that to call Gaza a genocide cheapens the word, and that to deny it defends the Jews. Both are backwards. It is the denial that cheapens the word, and the denial defends no one. Between our refusal to name the crime and the campaign waged in our name to sanction its judges, defund its courts, and discredit every body built to watch for it, we are not guarding the meaning of genocide — we are hollowing out the world’s power to recognize it, prevent it, judge it, and punish it. The very machinery Lemkin raised from the ashes of our own catastrophe, so that never again might be more than a slogan, is being dismantled with our blessing. We tell ourselves we are protecting our own. We are doing the opposite — stripping every people on earth of its one shield against annihilation, and ourselves along with them, when the turn comes round again to us.

I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

When myths are exploited for political purposes, to accompany violent “facts on the ground,” the results are generally disastrous. The imperative to find both a backstory and a redemption narrative for Europe’s Jews, and the concurrent downgrading of the value of Palestinian life, has resulted in the attempted erasure of seven millennia of actual history, the effacement of an ancient people and a century of war.
