My snap reaction was “that basically sounds like Nepalese food”, but the Indian Chinese food wiki gave me additional nuance that was satisfying to learn.

I always do the 3:1 ratio for the initial pour like he recommends. But for the final ratio, pour to your preference! Try different ratios out. In the video, he does a little over a 15:1 water to grounds ratio. Some recommend 16:1 to 19:1. If you like a strong cup, you might prefer closer to 14:1.

The grinder is probably where you want to spend most of your money. It needs to be a conical burr grinder. If you get electric, it needs to have high enough barrs of pressure to be able to do a good espresso grind. But personally I don’t think you can beat a hand grinder for home use.

For the gooseneck kettle, the premium option is definitely the Fellow Stag. That’s what all the coffee shops have. But you don’t really need a gooseneck kettle that fancy. This Cosori one is great. I use the 205 degree F “Coffee” setting to brew. It does not need to be boiling. a.co/d/0hsUjRfb

Yes! This video is awesome for learning how to brew pour over coffee. There’s a lot of different techniques and a lot of good videos out there, but this one explained all of the right details (e.g. ratios, adjustments) and had a POV camera angle. Been using it for years and it’s been great!

If you want equipment recommendations on those, let me know! The equipment quality is pretty important for the final cup. The whole setup can add up to a $100-140 if you get reasonably priced equipment. And some of that equipment would still be necessary if you added espresso later down the line.

The Hario V60 is a fantastic pour over rig. I highly recommend it for starting out. You can buy a bundle with the filters, a carafe, and the brewing device itself on Amazon for like $25. Then you’d need a gooseneck kettle, a digital kitchen scale, and a grinder if you want to grind your own beans.

I agree that the aeropress is best in class and has a lot of dedicated fans. However, I very much prefer pour over coffee to pressed coffee. It’s all personal preference, but to me pour over coffee has a better, more liquidy mouthfeel and cleaner taste. Pressed coffee tends to be viscous.

I completely agree with Stephanie. It sounds to me like a good place to start would be making good coffee, and then upgrade to espresso later if you become more invested in doing coffee at home. You can get a solid coffee setup for much cheaper than even a decent at best espresso setup.
