Burnham & Healey looking to Gordon Brown on science. But Brown didn't just back innovation: he invested heavily in the science base. The key question: will they do the same for curiosity-driven research and put STFC back on a sustainable footing?🧪🔭 www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

In separate news I read that there was a debate atvtge Labour conference about why so few scientists have been attracted to the uk. Canada was cited as doing well. A Canadian colleague of mine told me they could not believe their luck when boulby was cut because now Canada might get to host XLZD.

The freezing of the tax thresholds is exactly the policy to reverse the Osborne tax cuts though. They are literally doing it. The optics of raising the base rate are terrible, and if you raise the upper end it isn’t broad based and makes the problem worse. Freezing is the solution, slowly

Maud explained, "When I was in London, I went to this firm and complained about the scales. They were most apologetic and promised to put them right at once. “When did you buy them?” I was asked? “In 1790,” I said. They were just slightly taken aback, but, oh yes, they adjusted them…”
We are looking at a black and white postcard of the Great Hall when it had its roof much lower and the room was partitioned. There is a hidge podge of collections on display including paintings, furniture and display cases. In the foreground are the two balance scales with a series of much earlier Tudor weights in front.

Mixed feelings about such a campaign. It’s good people care - but our science is in a sorry state when it has to now rely on charitable donations. And if it works it may just encourage more cuts down the line because charity can take over.

Extremely concerning news that Jodrell Bank in Cheshire is facing closure, after UKRI announced the end of their funding from 2028. Though the Lovell Telescope is Grade I listed, the best strategy for preserving this internationally significant site is surely to keep the observatory in active use.

The 2.7% is on top of 15-20% reduction in grants in the last year as well as withdrawal from many high profile projects recently. It's only 2.7% by virtue of comparing to a baseline of 2025/2026.
