Dear colleagues, As I'm sure you are all well aware, the STFC has released the conclusions of its prioritisation, which is hurting the PPAN research area and beyond. If you are a PI, co-PI, UK project lead, or equivalent person responsible for an STFC-supported PPAN activity, we would like to know how you feel about the future of your project, grant, facility, and the impact the prioritisation has on your international partners.

We often hear: “Researchers should stop searching and start finding.” So grant funding now rewards “safe novelty”: ideas must be new, but not too new; ambitious, but not too risky. If we want genuinely transformative research, we have to give researchers room to search — including room to fail.🧪🔭

What UKRI calls a "prioritisation exercise" is, in fact, a massive butchery. Don't trust their numbers (in particular the idea that PPAN is only cut by 2.7%...); they are hiding the sad reality: entire projects are defunded. Some are brutally cut. Science will suffer from it. So will the UK.🧪🔭
