I've been fortunate enough to have slept in an unheated RV while homeless & even then, when the cold seeps in and no blankets can stop it, that alone will keep you awake, but now think about the discomfort of the car seat, lights out the window, the lack of safety. i am not safe out here. i do not feel safe sleeping in a car. i have no other viable safer options that i can afford. nobody in my life knows where i sleep from night to night. nobody asks. they are all housed, some own their homes. if something happens to me, i will be as i began: alone.

i am a survivor of SA. i don't know how i'll get through upcoming trauma anniversaries alone, homeless, without even the presence of a dear ESA dog companion near me. i am alone. since 2016, i've had an ESA dog companion in my life. i do not like today. no, i do not like today at all.

my last published piece. 2019. in 2020 i began living in my car, Seattle. a literary agent wrote to me the week before i became car homeless. we had our first phone call during my first month of living in a car. i’ve struggled since then. homelessness is a thief. writing requires time, safety.

instead of responding to a person's emotional pain with, "here's a hotline," "get immediate help by clicking here"—which come across as dismissive & rejecting at best—be emotionally honest. please don’t lie. be present with the person. lean into how they feel. stay quiet. complexity is hard.

in July i drove 3 hours roundtrip for a part-time outdoor weekend only job. wildfire smoke. tolls. sleeping in my car. showering at a gym. 48 minutes to closest highway truck rest stop to part-time job. lost $$ to work. i pushed myself hard to work. didn’t even break even for gas. it didn’t work.
