A small number of angry drivers / pandering politicians had enough incentive to get the council to remove a years-old quiet neighbourhood scheme. The same concentration of power doesn’t exist in the diffuse body of local people who would like not to have overturning SUVs in their street

Waiting for 12 months may be preferable for determining the increase in volume of traffic, but traffic speeds are already dangerous.

The Council has promised to monitor traffic volumes and speeds for 12 months after the removal of the filters. No sign of any monitoring during the first 4 weeks since removal, but average speed on Braid Avenue is definitely much higher than 17.7mph now.

Parents representing 5 schools requested that the filters which had been on the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route for 5 years, and had contributed to a significant reduction in traffic, remain in place but the Council removed them due to errors in the documentation. Now the speeding drivers are back.

New research from Dr Isaac Garcia-Murillas at the Institute of Cancer Research, London has shown that a new type of ‘tissue-free’ blood test could provide a cheaper, more accessible way to predict breast cancer recurrence. breastcancernow.org/about-us/res...
New Research

New, cheaper blood test could help detect breast cancer recurrence earlierWhat was the aim?

A liquid biopsy is a highly sensitive blood test can spot breast cancer coming back months before it becomes visible on hospital scans.

Right now, these tests aren’t suitable for everyone, because you need detailed information about the tumour to develop a blood test tailored to the person.

In this study, they wanted to find out if a new ‘tissue-free’ liquid biopsy could provide a cheaper, more accessible way to predict breast cancer recurrence earlier. What did they find?

They found that detecting cancer DNA in the blood was a strong sign that breast cancer was likely to return.

On average, these blood tests picked up signs of recurrence around 8 months before the cancer appeared on a scan.

And the new ‘tissue-free’ test worked just as well as more complex tests that rely on information gathered from tumour biopsies. What does this mean?

This research could help make blood tests to detect breast cancer recurrence available to more people in the future.

If future studies show that acting on these warning signs can help stop cancer progressing, doctors could give extra treatment earlier, and stop the disease before it spreads.

Bringing us another step closer to personalised follow-up care for people living beyond breast cancer.

A week before removing the filters, the council finally released the data we’ve all been waiting for. Pre modal filters, weekday average traffic volume on Braid Avenue was 3,800 vehicles and 8am-9am traffic was 450 vehicles. That’s roughly a car every 8 seconds as the kids go to school.

The road markings highlighting the “Quiet” Route were refreshed 2 days ago but they missed the Give Way markings on Braid Avenue at Corrennie Drive. Just watched several drivers speed through give way only to speed back up the hill when they realised the filter has not been fully removed yet.

Meanwhile Edinburgh Council is removing the modal filters that for 5 years have helped keep people safe when using the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route. Traffic down 40%, cycling up 160%, ave speeds down to 15mph, lots of people walking, all being risked over a drafting error that they won’t fix!

And now we're looking for treatments to stop metastatic breast cancer in its tracks. We helped discover that drugs called PAROP inhibitors can be used to treat breast cancer.
