Thrilled to have a poem about the Ticket to Scaryness on the Poetry Express. Check out some of the other newly featured poems at the link below. scaryness.com/halloween-ca...
On my honor… - by Shaun Jex

The Maltesers are all missing
The Goldbears are all gone
The Cadbury has flown the coop
Please, don’t make me go on!

The Mars bars must have been misplaced
The Aero’s absent, too
Must Halloween be called off now?
Oh, what are we to do?

The Freddo bars bid us farewell
The Smarties said “So long!”
I fear that Trick or Treat this year
Has gone all kinds of wrong

The Jelly Babies waved bye bye
The Twirl cried, “Toodle-oo”
Of course, I didn’t eat them all
I swear, this time it’s true!

We sat down and watched the AEW tribute to Pac this morning. Pac was the best pro wrestling had to offer, and AEW gave him a tribute worthy of that legacy.
Throw your heart in front of you and run ahead to catch it.

There were dead birds washed up near the lighthouse I visited today. They looked vulnerable and poignant, no different in their way from a shipwreck victim from a century ago. The bodies fragile and too harshly treated by the light, but also beautiful and somehow remembered by wave and wind and rock

The newest issue of Epistemic Literary ( @epistemiclit.bsky.social ) is available now! It includes my poem “Highline” among a lot of other wonderful pieces, which you can read at the link below: epistemiclit.com/current-issue
Highline
I don’t know how to answer
	Your questions about God
Or the meaning of it all
	But I can say
That my muscles ache
And sweat stings my eyes
	As I walk
 	this dirt path
Between wildflowers and pine
Yes…
I could proclaim the miracle
Of a cool breeze
		Caressing my cheek
Beneath the sun’s relentless gaze
Or meditate
On the hymn of a ground squirrel
Sounding his barbaric yawp
Across alpine meadows
I could testify of burning lungs
That gulp for oxygen
Or the way a drop water
	Soothes chapped lips
Like a loving mother
	Kissing a fevered brow
I could stand at the edge
	Of this rocky outcrop
And proclaim it all
	To the glacial valleys below
But the trail goes on
	And the hour is late
So, I place one foot
	In front of the other
			And continue on my way

To be honest, I'm giving myself a couple days before I watch the Pac tribute on AEW Dynamite. I've seen a few clips this evening, and it looks like it's been a beautiful and powerful show.

There’s a new word of the week from @thetoypress.bsky.social . The word is “super” Here’s my poem! #kidlit #poetry #writingforchildren
It’s a bird! It’s a plane!

Sometimes
I like to imagine
I’m the Lingít Superman
Powered by fry bread
And fresh g̱áax'w

Just think!
If I could soar
Through the blue sky
Like the mighty Kal-El
I’d be a basketball star

Never afraid
To take my shot
As the clock ticks down
And the whole game
Is on the line

I’d never
Get picked last
Or sit on the bench
But I might end up with
My photo in the paper

Of course
I wouldn’t brag
When you’re a hero
You just let your work
Talk for you

Both in the news and on a personal level, death has been omnipresent recently. So, I did the emotionally mature thing and wrote a poem about going all “I, Tonya” on the Grim Reaper. That is, if I recall, one of the vital steps in Elizabeth Kubler Ross’s stages of grief.

The Guard Dog
by Shaun Jex

“Golden retriever brings toys to the intruder who breaks into his house.”
—The Associated Press

Not quite as brave as Balto
Nor noble as Roselle
Who did her duty faithfully
While walls around her fell

Not stalwart as old Stubby
Who served out in the trench
But thief and flatfoot both agree
This mutt is quite a mensch

Gutted to hear of Benjamin Satterly’s passing (aka Pac in AEW and Neville in WWE). He was easily one of the most dynamic and gifted performers I've ever seen. Thoughts are with his friends, family, and colleagues.

I LOVED this week’s #wordoftheweek from @thetoypress.bsky.social . Here’s my poem. #writingforchildren #poetry #kidlit
The Fox

She looks like a bit of flame
Creeping her way through
The tall summer grasses
To the edge of the creek
Where she will gaze longingly
At the flock of water fowl
Dabbling on the far bank
Dreaming of a feast
So close, and yet, so far away
