I want to share that I’ve withdrawn my film from consideration at the Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle. This decision follows the events surrounding the organization’s screening of the Israeli film Holding Liat, particularly its response to community members who gathered to voice their dissent.To be clear, it is not my place, nor my intent, to re-litigate what happened, or to judge the film or its filmmaker. But as a member of the South Asian community (filmmaker or otherwise) a community that Tasveer purports to serve, I hold the organization responsible for a lack of accountability to that community, in failing to create conditions that addressed one of the most pressing moral issues of our times.Given the genocide unfolding in Gaza, this is not a moment for polite neutrality. It is incumbent on all of us to take a stand.My hope is that this can be an opportunity for Tasveer's leadership to reflect on how to do better.
