Had bookmarked this and just now listened. Fantastic episode. The enslavement of Native Americans was based on *where* they were. They were on land that settler Americans wanted. It was qualitatively distinct from the enslavement of African Americans and those differences need to be understood.

In “The Memory of ‘76,” I wrote about how, in 1976, Jesse Lemisch had his students collect cheap ephemeral items branded for the Bicentennial and make an exhibit out of them. Prof. Jason Smith at SCSU has done the same thing for the 250 and I’m excited to speak at their exhibit’s opening next week.

Do I give deeply researched analytical women's history classics to my elders for Mother's Day? Of course I do. Every one of these books tells you something fundamental about early America that explains why you should be shocked but not surprised about where we are. Mom Books should be a thing.

When enslaved people fled to British lines during the Revolution, the British expected men who could work. Instead, families arrived together. Women with children. Kin groups. People who refused to flee alone. They forced the British Army to protect people it had never planned to accommodate.
