Ballooning, as dangerous as it was, became a crowd pleaser following the Civil War. Many daring aeronauts accepted the risk and offered performances at fairs across the country. Performers offered acts varying from trapeze performances to concurrent parachute jumps by man, woman, and even dog!

“King of the Clouds” Prof J.F. Thomison would go up in a hot air balloon 3 times for $100, twice with his dog and once “hanging by the teeth.” E. Ashlock and Madam Townsend’s custom stationery boasts that they use the largest balloons, highlights their ascensions by lady or gent, and depicts a dog in a parachute. Just over 100 years ago, the Clements Library hosted Professor Verner W. Crane of Brown University to teach a “Seminar in American History” over the summer semester. This marked the first time a summer class was taught in the library! ☀️

On #ThisDayinHistory, 597 years ago, a young teenager by the name of Joan arrived in the city of Orléans, France. In 1914, 485 years after Joan’s brave and courageous triumphs, U-M students honored her with a “Jeanne d’Arc Pageant” hosted at Ferry Field.
