When “Translated By," my documentary with Veronica Selver is finished, I’ll have several books in their original languages to be able to show their covers in the film. Here’s the Russian version of Andrey Kurkov's Grey Bees. Of course, I also have Boris Dralyuk's translation to English.

After every war someone has to tidy up. Things won’t pick themselves up, after all. Someone has to shove the rubble to the roadsides so the carts loaded with corpses can get by. -Wisława Szymborska, “The End and the Beginning” (t. Cavanagh & Barańczak) #everynightapoem #war
The End and the beginning
After every war
someone has to tidy up.
Things won't pick themselves up, after all.
Someone has to shove the rubble to the roadsides so the carts loaded with corpses can get by.
Someone has to trudge through sludge and ashes, through the sofa springs, the shards of glass, the bloody rags.
Someone has to lug the post to prop the wall,
someone has to glaze the window, set the door in its frame.
No sound bites, no photo opportunities, and it takes years.
All the cameras have gone to other wars.
The bridges need to be rebuilt, the railroad stations, too.
Shirtsleeves will be rolled to shreds.
286
Someone, broom in hand, still remembers how it was.
Someone else listens, nodding his unshattered head.
But others are bound to be bustling nearby who'll find all that a little boring.
From time to time someone still must dig up a rusted argument from underneath a bush and haul it off to the dump.
Those who knew
what this was all about must make way for those who know little.
And less than that.
And at last nothing less than nothing.
Someone has to lie there in the grass that covers up the causes and effects
with a cornstalk in his teeth, gawking at clouds.

So the Supreme Court’s strategy seems pretty clearly to be forestall admitting we have a constitutional crisis by giving Trump huge victories on narrow procedural grounds. This is akin to having engineers move the Rubicon River closer and closer to Rome to avoid Caesar crossing it.

Judge Harvie Wilkinson, a Reagan nominee to the 4th Circuit who for years has been one of the most reliable feeders of clerks to SCOTUS conservatives, calls out the absolute craziness of what the Trump administration wants here.
And the government rightfully concedes that it was an “error” and a “mistake” to ignore this process. Mot. for Stay at 16-17. And, if it is truly a mistake, one would also expect the government to do what it can to rectify it. Most of us attempt to undo, to the extent that we can, the mistakes that we have made. But, to the best of my knowledge, the government has not made the attempt here. The facts of this case thus present the potential for a disturbing loophole: namely that the government could whisk individuals to foreign prisons in violation of court orders and then contend, invoking its Article II powers, that it is no longer their custodian, and there is nothing that can be done. It takes no small amount of imagination to understand that this is a path of perfect lawlessness, one that courts cannot condone.
