“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.

Another YA fantasy I really enjoyed lately: These Stolen Lives by Sharada Keats. Seamless worldbuilding, and I was low key obsessed with the chapter titles when I figured out where they came from ☺️ so brilliant. #booksky #yafantasy
Book cover of These Stolen Lives by Sharada Keats. The cover shows an island shaped like the face of a woman in profile. She has her chin raised and eyes closed, and green and red trees form her hair. In the water around her, four ships with red sails approach the shore. The tagline reads “Life must be paid for if you want to survive.”

This is a seminal moment: a Labour government cutting disability benefits. Not just continuing Tory levels. Cutting. This comes after a week of speculation, itself an act of cruelty by a government toying with people’s dignity. These cuts are disgraceful - and they will cost lives.

Botany valentine. Another from years past. New one on Monday!
Beautiful red roses on a pink background with flowing script saying "Roses are red," Violets budding and blooming. "Violets are blue," Hydnora plants opening up looking like terrifying red mouths bursting from the hard sandy soil. "Hydnora are leafless, bizarrely fleshy, and incapable of producing chlorophyll," A splash of cute red and pink hearts. "And so are you. Happy Valentine's Day."

From the mighty @theobrienpress.bsky.social: this beautiful story from Sophie Kirtley and Ellan Rankin, which has been our bedtime book all this week. Gorgeous words and pictures, brilliant in-jokes (incl. Grandad's number plate! 😂), and a deeply moving finish. It's a gem. #OurWeePlace ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Illustrated picture book cover. Image shows an older man, white, with white hair and beard, wearing brown trousers, a blue sleeveless jumper, and a striped shirt underneath the jumper. Under his arm is a red-covered book. Holding his other hand is a small girl, white, with dark hair which is long and wavy. She wears a yellow raincoat, a pink striped t-shirt, grey trousers and reddish pink shoes. Behind them is the sea, and they walk along the uneven rock formation known as the Giant's Causeway in Antrim, Northern Ireland. The book title, Our Wee Place, plus the names of the author (Sophie Kirtley) and illustrator (Ellan Rankin) appear above the characters' heads.
