And that last part at church really bothered me. I remember asking where in the bible Jesus put qualifiers on the “love thy neighbor” commandment. I really thought it was all our neighbors we should love and respect… not just those that look or pray like us.

I don’t remember the bond among all Americans so much as I remember the horrific Islamophobia and xenophobia I witnessed shortly after. I remember classmates fearing for the safety of their Muslim parents. I remember the fear mongering in my (southern baptist) church.
