Today, DOE renamed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), one of the crown jewels of U.S. science and engineering for renewable energy, the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). We should be reinvesting in our world-leading national labs not renaming them. www.nrel.gov/news/detail/...

Holy shit. NREL is now the National Laboratory of the Rockies?! In the early days of DOGE people there were whispering about a name change to avoid the ire of MAGAs. It pissed me off - prioritizing the preservation of the institution at the expense of its state mission? So disappointing.

Utterly bizarre to describe climate change policy as some kind of radical-left albatross. The IRA contained precisely the kind of 'kitchen table' programs everyone says Democrats should focus on — and they're popular! The problem was that Americans *didn't know* what the IRA was or who passed it.
It is completely obvious that the party lost in 2024 because it overcommitted to a range of unpopular left-wing positions, some of which yielded disastrous policy results (like the Biden migration wave) while others merely persuaded constituencies that had voted Democratic in the past (like blue-collar Midwesterners or culturally conservative Latino men) that the party now cared more about climate changeIn poll after poll, Americans have said that they know little to nothing about the IRA, with the most recent poll, out in April 2024, finding that 4 in 10 people say that they don’t know enough about the law’s provisions to have an opinion on them. At the same time, a July 2023 Data for Progress poll found that large numbers of Americans support provisions in the IRA when asked specifically about them, including tax credits for businesses that produce clean electricity, electric vehicles, and new clean energy technologies (69%); rebates up to $14,000 per household to improve home energy efficiency (71%); and ramping up production of American-made clean energy technologies (73%). And perhaps most significantly, support for these key IRA provisions has grown over time among all likely voters, especially Republican voters.

DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations was meant to be a launchpad for ambitious projects that could help the U.S. lead on everything from decarbonizing factories to boosting rural energy resiliency. Now it's a shell of itself. My latest for @canarymedia.com www.canarymedia.com/articles/cle...

How Trump gutted the team meant to build America’s energy future
The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations had over $25 billion to help companies scale novel low-carbon technologies. Trump is working to erase it.

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

The Administration’s cancellation of a near-complete wind power farm will raise the cost of your electricity bill. Every month, look at your bill. It’s too high and it’s going to go up because of this. For what?

The entire federal government is being mobilized to destroy the American wind energy industry. Why? Because the toddler king didn't like seeing windmills from a golf course, so he decided he hates wind power and now that's the policy of the United States. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/03/c...
Agencies that typically have little to do with offshore wind power have been drawn into the effort, the two people said. At the Health and Human Services Department, for instance, officials are studying whether wind turbines are emitting electromagnetic fields that could harm human health. And the Defense Department is probing whether the projects could pose risks to national security.

Last week Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health and human services secretary, said he was working with Doug Burgum, the interior secretary, Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, Chris Wright, the energy secretary, and Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, as part of a “departmental coalition team” to investigate the risks from offshore wind farms.

“We’re all working together on this issue,” Mr. Kennedy said during a cabinet meeting.

Really important. "The withdrawal of incentives is one thing. A targeted federal tax that could increase development costs by up to 20% that is levied over longstanding supply chain relationships that will take not years but rather decades to rebuild is another."

Oh wow great @haleaziz.bsky.social piece on a 2018 case in which Trump’s ICE screwed up and erroneously deported a guy. AND THEY BROUGHT HIM BACK because why wouldn’t they? We’re in a much darker place now. Free link: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/15/u...
In one court document from Aug. 23, 2018, the government owned up to its mistake, saying Mr. Subaihani had been removed to Iraq despite the court's order.
Locating Mr. Subaihani was complicated because nobody knew where he had gone, or even if he had made it to Iraq. By September 2018, several weeks after Mr. Subaihani had been deported, a federal judge demanded ICE go to great lengths to find him.ICE officials complied, explaining to the court that they were in touch with State Department staff in Iraq and in other countries he had transited through. They even called airline officials — Mr.
Subaihani had been deported on a commercial flight — for more on his whereabouts.
n late September, ICE officials notified the court that they had und evidence Mr. Subaihani had made it to Iraq. By October, Mr.
Subaihani's attorneys had tracked him down with the help of an investigator, and set about working with ICE to get him back to the United States.

IT WAS NEVER ABOUT ANTISEMITISM
“We’re not looking to just file lawsuits — we want to compel a cultural change in how Jewish Americans are treated on college campuses,” Attorney General Pam Bondi, a member of the task force, said in an interview.

But the effort has gone beyond addressing antisemitism, with schools targeted for diversity programs and supporting transgender athletes. In the view of some of Mr. Trump’s closest advisers and key donors, leftists have seized control of America’s most powerful institutions, including pillars of higher education, and wresting back power is key to the future of Western civilization.
