Years ago in college I took a class on the history of racism and this was one of the books we read. As sad as it sounds, it was the first time I was exposed to this kind of thing beyond covering slavery in the US in high school. We really don’t educate enough about these things. You should read it.

Goodnight from The Witch Shirt pub at Cloverhill, where the charity bucket is going round to help those folk caught up in last week rain of stones. Goodnight from Ellis Garside, asking the lines on his face to remember this as the moment he saw a Thornshriek. Goodnight from Hookland.

This...will be our least serious book (Posing as our most serious book) and it will have two songs in it.

Goodnight from The Lamb Hotel, where David Steed haunts the bar in hope of meeting the brass-eyed man. Goodnight from Ronnie Hart, desperately scrabbling in the glove box of his Vauxhall Chevette for anything to help him escape a place that’s not any map. Goodnight from Hookland.

Finished up this custom shop set last night, it's on its way to New Zealand now. Customer ordered a ceramic Trident 2 bridge, A5 Valkyrie neck, and wanted bold text on a black background. The pink logo was my idea and really helps set this set off, IMO. #elysianpickups #tunedaperture #fucktrump
Electric guitar soapbar humbucker set with black tops featuring rainbow text that says "BE GAY" on the neck pickup and "DO CRIME" on the bridge pickup. The Elysian Pickups logo is featured in the bottom left corner.

9. The Magus by John Fowles This book affected me. The characters' emotions felt palpably real while reading and few books have maintained such a lingering presence. It really drives home the idea that the world is not black and white but rather extremely grey. I still get mad about this book.

8. The Notebook Trilogy by Ágota Kristóf A story of war and what it makes people capable of doing. I don't want to say more than that, please just read it. Fun fact (it's not fun, it's depressing, IYKYK): the characters Claus and Lucas from the video game Mother 3 get their names from these books.

7. Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille Another work discovered through music, in this case the Of Montreal song Standing at a Swedish Festival. I knew the book's general reputation going in, and it does not disappoint. It is obscene and grotesque, but also hilarious and scathing in its commentary.

6. Secret Rendezvous by Kōbō Abe Like many I read A Woman in the Dunes first and that made me seek out the rest of his works. This is the one that really stuck with me though. The ending is very bleak but I feel like this is a good example of the journey being more significant than the destination.

5. A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami I read Norwegian Wood first since it's recommended as an entry-point for Murakami, but Sheep Chase was the second book I read and the one that got me hooked. His magical realism is on full display here, and being part of a trilogy ensured continued interest.

4. Plato's Republic The first major work of philosophy I read in college and the one that has stuck with me the most, not necessarily because I agree with its contents (yikes, no) but rather because it taught me how to read and enjoy philosophical works. I had a great teacher for it so that helped.

3. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway Last book from my high school era. I have always loved Hemingway, warts and all. This was the first time I finished a book, closed the cover, and sat in awe of what I had just read. The final scene hit me like a truck both due to its gravity and brevity.

2. Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs After Kerouac I then found the rest of the Beats and hit upon Burroughs first. This was still high school and the book shattered my idea of what writing could be. This more than anything else got me into what could generally be called subversive literature.

1. The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac I first heard of Kerouac in the Jawbreaker song "Boxcar" and that's what made me seek out his books in high school. Our school library only had a copy of The Dharma Bums, so that's what I read first. It has remained my favorite and most re-read work of his.

Also off the cuff from me. I could probably make several equally representational charts with completely different selections but 🤷 I am aware of the lack of women authors on my list and in my own library; it is a deficiency I am working to correct. I'll try my best to sum up each of them below ⤵️
A 3x3 grid of My Nine Books: The 9 books I'll never forget

From upper-left to bottom right:

1. The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac

2. Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs

3. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

4. The Republic by Plato

5. A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami

6. Secret Rendezvous by Kōbō Abe

7. Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille

8. The Notebook, the Proof, the Third Lie by Ágota Kristóf

9. The Magus by John Fowles
