In Old English, the passive voice could be formed in two ways: A. 'hit is ġebrōht' = it is brought B. 'hit wierþ ġebrōht' = lit. it becomes brought, with 'weorþan' (to become) Sister languages such as German still use B: 'es wird gebracht' 'Weorþan' became 'to worth', but now it's all but gone:

The English words 'no' and 'no' don't have the same origin. 'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never"). 'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any"). They only share the n-, from *ne ("not"). Click to learn more: 1/

The German word 'Feuer' looks a bit like French 'feu' and both mean "fire". A coincidence! They're not etymologically related at all. 'Feuer' and 'fire' come from West Germanic *fuir, while 'feu' stems from Latin 'focus' (hearth), borrowed into English as 'focus'. Click my new graphic for more:

After a cosy Christmas fire, there are cinders in the fireplace, as well as ashes, which in French are called cendres. 'Cinder' and 'cendre' may look alike but they aren't etymologically related: they come from two unrelated words. However, 'cendre' did influence the spelling of 'cinder'. More:

What do marshals and mares have in common? Both of these words derive from a Proto-Germanic word for "horse". The distant ancestor of 'marshal' was *marhskalk, which meant "horse attendant", so 'marshal' has made quite a carreer! Click my new graphic to learn more:
