'hit wierþ ġebrōht' = lit. it becomes brought, with 'weorþan' (to become) Sister languages such as German still use B: 'es wird gebracht' 'Weorþan' became 'to worth', but now it's all but gone: 89521

'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never"). 'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any"). They only share the n-, from *ne ("not"). Click to learn more: 1/ 1423862

They're not etymologically related at all. 'Feuer' and 'fire' come from West Germanic *fuir, while 'feu' stems from Latin 'focus' (hearth), borrowed into English as 'focus'. 'Cinder' and 'cendre' may look alike but they aren't etymologically related: they come from two unrelated words. However, 'cendre' did influence the spelling of 'cinder'. More: 611129

This isn't a recent thing: it started in the 14th century. Several sister languages of English, such as Frisian and Afrikaans, even merged the verbs for "to lie" and "to lay" completely.
